Please understand that most people tend to call just about any demonic adversary “Satan”.
Yes, I know, and I’m not sure I’m completely comfortable with that. It leans towards making Satan an impersonal evil force throughout the universe instead of what he is: just a specific, finite fallen angel. A fallen angel with many demonic comrades, all specific, finite personal beings themselves.

Also, I don’t doubt that Satan himself tempted great Saints. But he cannot be involved in every evil and temptation. There are tons of other demons, they must be doing something, and we shouldn’t lean towards a terminology that starts to blend them all into one big, impersonal evil force. They are individual, limited beings.

Yes, I believe ‘Satan’ is working awefully hard these days to take souls down with him. Thank goodness we have Jesus Christ for protection. In these great times, the battle of the spirit is strong, God gives us GREAT powers to conquer evil spirits. Humility is one of the “powers”.

Yes, even National Geographic my friend. I don’t mean to get off of the subject, but have you seen some of the stuff on the NGC about the “science” behind the Bible and theories about the Holy Grail and the Last Supper. Some of its okay, but for the most part they make Jesus out to be nothing more than a political rebel for the poor people of the time and say NOTHING about his divinity. They also do everything short of calling the Bible a bunch of fairytales used for political gain. They love to interview a a lot of no-name college professors who are educated beyond their own intelligence, and don’t bother to interview one minister, priest, nun, or theologian. There is definitely an agenda.

OFF TOPIC, but, I love you. Happy b/c others see it as well.

I notice this on a regular basis as well. Everything Christian seems to get washed and/or drowned in the world around us. It is being done on purpose, without a doubt, In order to remove us further from God.

When they try to remove the “supernatural” from God, the Bible, our beliefs, our Church, our Saints, our prayers, they are attempting to destroy our faith.

Which of the two is Satan better at? I don’t care… his sole purpose is to remove our faith from God & his son our saviour, Jesus Christ.

I think the devil taunts me a lot as well as tempts.

If I sin, I know God’s Mercy is there but I can sense the devil right at my face laughing his head off saying something like:

“O*h, you poor thing, you fell on your face! You’ve sinned! What kind of Christian are you anyways? Is God’s Mercy REALLY there to get you back up? I’m not sure on that because He hates sin! Do you REALLY trust Him? But don’t worry, you can always go to Confession to be absolved. Besides, does the Eucharist REALLY help you because you keep sinning?” *

It goes on and on. The worse part is, the father of lies KNOWS how weak I am spiritually and I think that’s why I fall down spiritually because he knows I’m a quick giver-uper. But I know he’s telling me big fat lies. Though the temptations are tempting…tells me right there how quickly Eve fell during the Fall.

But in the end, I know he’s NOT going to win.

So it’s Satan (or one of his minions) that sometimes says to me at Mass, “What are you doing here?”???

I’ve been thinking it was my own doubt…

Yes, I’m Catholic, and yes, I’m “odd,” but tell me, who isn’t?

This One:

Probably your own Doubt - I think we tend to blame a lot of stuff on Satan and his minions that we actually do to ourselves.

I’m sur Satan had a hand in keeping me out of the Church for all of those years, but I’m just as sure that it wouldn’t have happened if I had been unwilling to cooperate with his program.

The sin against the holy Spirit is probably being so sure that God would never forgive you that you not only don’t ask, but you even reject the offer of forgiveness when it’s made.

One thing I have learned about being “obsessed” with satan, as opposed to “possessed,” is that anything can be turned around to mean just the opposite.

For example, I can read your sentence with many different twists, such as the following, and there may be any of these thoughts about the matter in your very typing…

“Probably your own Doubt … blah blah … we actually do to ourselves.”

“Doubt … we tend to blame … satan … ourselves.”

“Satan … minion … do to selves”
I’m sur Satan had a hand in keeping me out of the Church for all of those years, but I’m just as sure that it wouldn’t have happened if I had been unwilling to cooperate with his program.
I have recently revealed to a woman who works with holistic health and neurobiology, that I believe “satan” works even through our typos – gives confusing messages such as, was this person a bad speller? Bad typist? doesn’t care enough to proofread? Proofread it but didn’t see the same mistake? Don’t know it’s a mistake? Hey, they were trying to imply another word here that loads the meaning … or not?

Yes, “satan” as I’m describing him, with a lower case “s” and “h” certainly did have a hand in keeping you out of the Church for all of those years, because you know one way or another if you die you will wind up in the Church and not walk out under your own power. If you think about it, the very conquest between “satan” and everyday struggles of life endured with fruits of the Holy Spirit, is enough blessing to make you enter into the Kingdom, and according to my calculations once one of us go we all go; we will each get the sense we have been there all along and have just finally gotten up the confidence to proclaim, “as surely as the Savior if born, I am in the Kingdom on this very day.”

After all, do you think Christ meant to give the thief privileges over all the good people who were too confused to see that He was God? It isn’t like they weren’t trying. The thief himself put Christ about himself, and therefore this exchange teaches us that all will be saved, even non-Christians and non-Catholics IMO.

Thank you. It’s basically despair, but then again when we despair what is it of? We despair of our attempts to keep a plan operating after others have given up on it – whether it needs to be changed is yet a whole different matter entirely.

St. Michael, IMO, but than again I just got done playing some particularly soul-haunting music with my daughters and their friends, two violins, bells, and I played alternately organ or piano. The name of my home Church in Wichita? All Saints, of course. I’m supposed to be updating their website, among other things, instead of posting here.

PS I was once impressed by this “obsession” when I heard about how Pio did it, but then I realized he was not obsessed because he wanted to be, but as a gift to him, and after his death new for the rest of us. The problem I had was if Pio was so close to God, then why would he take ostensibly repentant confessees and run them out when all he should have to do is change them from ceremonial repentance to TRUE repentance? It takes a “whole” person to do that, and Pio was limited from being one in so many ways his expressions of love literally oozed out like Christ’s.

Is satan better at making people think that he himself does not exist or making people think that God does not exist?

At neither, because he does not exist. 😉

But if I were Satan, I’d deceive mankind by painting a false picture of god; I’d dupe the world into worshipping the most brutal sadistic tyrant in the history of religion such as the god portrayed in the Hebrew Scriptures. 👍

God has allowed me to see satan mascarading around at a few times in my life, once in a Christain bookstore. When we looked at each other, I just had this shutter come over me, fingered my Padre Pio relic, and left. I would have rather not had that experience, but I think God wanted me to be aware.

Thank you for making my night. I haven’t enjoyed a good laugh in a while. You can’t possibly be serious… does the word schizophrenic mean anything to you? ’

As Salman Rushdie said, “Religion is the ecstasy of the masses.”

For me Satan’s worst ploy is to persuade our conscience that it’s ok to do bad to do good. The Catechism tells us this can never be so.

For instance the evil one may put in our minds the thought “its OK not to pray tonight, its late and God wants you to get to sleep so you can be at your best tomorrow” or “its Ok not to go to Mass - you are too busy with family commitments, God will understand” these temptations are very frustrating to me.

Only living a Sacramental life with frequent prayer, examination of conscience and reading of the Word can help.

I would say Satan is better at convincing us that he doesn’t exist. After all, loads of people believe in God or a god or supreme being of some kind, but a huge percentage either don’t believe in or don’t take seriously the idea of Satan or evil or hell.

I don’t think those who speak of encountering Satan are actually being prideful - they’re just using his name as shorthand for anything evil, just as when they speak of God they don’t necessarily assume that the Almighty is always directly personally intervening either.

Yes, satan want us to draw away from goodness to bad.
For instance the evil one may put in our minds the thought "its OK not to pray tonight, its late and God wants you to get to sleep so you can be at your best tomorrow"or “its Ok not to go to Mass - you are too busy with family commitments, God will understand” these temptations are very frustrating to me.
I think, for God, it’s OK if I am tired I want to go to sleep early, so just say “thankyou Jesus”. That’s enough a prayer.

But satan say, “you must pray long prayers, otherwise…”
Thus, before such temptation comes (your post above), satan has designed that we think “I have to pray long prayer, otherwise…” so then prayers and Masses become more like burdens. With such a lie, then satan build another lie to say “its OK not to pray tonight and not to go to Mass, because of this and that” and then another lie satan will say: “you fail to go to Mass and you don’t pray anymore”.

So satan’s temptation is build based on lies that focus on our strength (or rather, our weakness). God, however, does not really focus on our strength/ weakness. He only call us to come to Him just as we are.
Only living a Sacramental life with frequent prayer, examination of conscience and reading of the Word can help.
I don’t oppose this. It’s more like wheter we see God as a legalist or is He the spirit of truth and goodness, meaning He wants us to be happy and good always.

Your post above, I don’t agree neither disagree. It’s a subtle lie about God being so legalistic that makes us think we have to do this and that in order to be with God. To focus on our strength will make us legalists. Being legalistic is not totally bad, it is better than being an “outlaw”. But it is not good enough because by that way especially Satan tempts us all the time. Thus the law have sin alive in us, says St Paul. The promise of God’s spirit is what kills “legalistic goodness” in us. Thus we become good not because we are legalists but because of God’s love. In this way, satan cannot tempt us anymore. Our flesh will not respond to temptation anymore because God put down “us being so good out of our own strengths/ weaknesses”, and raise us up together with Jesus in His glory, to be good because God forgives us our sins, thus our goodness comes from Him not from our own strengths/ weakness anymore. To die of self includes “forgive self for not being so strong all the time”. But God who is strong is “my strength and my protection, and my help always”.
