Hi everyone,

I want to get my dad a book that defends the teachings of Catholicism but I have limited $ at the moment so I can only pick one for now. He was raised in a mixed Protestant - Catholic home where his dad jumped around to many different Protestant churches and brought the family with him. He picked up a lot of typical anti-Catholic sentiments like that we worship Mary, why can only men be priests, etc. Thankfully he attends Mass with my Catholic mom and raised us kids Catholic, and he largely agrees with Catholic teaching. He has said before that he would join the Church fully if some ideas like ‘worshipping Mary’ could be reconciled. I’ve tried to explain these things to him but I think him finding it out for himself by reading would be more effective. I’d love for my dad to receive Communion in his life and to be able to fully participate in Catholic life with my mom.

So… have you read any of these books? Which one is best? Do you have any other suggestions? He is a transport truck driver so I’m thinking of getting him the CD Why a Protestant Pastor Became Catholic (CD) by Scott Hahn for him to listen to while he is driving at work too.
  1. Let There Be No Divisions Among You: Why All Christians Should be Catholic by Fr. John MacLaughlin
  2. Why We’re Catholic: Our Reasons for Faith, Hope, and Love by Trent Horn
  3. Rome Sweet Home Scott and Kimberly Hahn
  4. Proving the Catholic Faith is Biblical: From Priestly Celibacy to the Rosary by Dave Armstrong
  5. Seven Lies About Catholic History by Diane Moczar
Thank you and have a blessed day!

Of that group, the transition from Protestant to Catholic might best be Rome Sweet Rome. If the issue is more along the lines of some Catholic doctrine, I’d consider the Why we’re Catholic .

I’m rereading Why Do Catholics Do That? by Kevin Orlin Johnson for the ninth time, but now it looks like I have 5 more books to add to my reading list! Thanks, these all look great! I had heard of Rome Sweet Home before but not the others. Although, I don’t think you could go wrong with anything by Hahn or Armstrong. When I became Catholic, Why Do Catholics Do That? was the first book I read, followed by Surprised By Truth (the purple one). I don’t know what the general consensus on these two books is, but they opened my eyes to the truth of the Catholic faith.

Best book I’ve read explaining the Catholic view on Mary is “Behold Your Mother” by Tim Staples. Best overall Catholic apologetics book for me has been “Handbook of Catholic Apologetics” by Peter Kreeft and Ron Tacelli.
God Bless…
