God is still in charge Kevin… I think that our current Archbishop could be a prime candidate someday…What do you think??
Do you mean acting Bishop O’Malley? I thought he was just a temporary fix and not a permanent placement? He’s a fine man, but I am not left with the impression that he is slotted or groomed for the Vatican.

Kevin Walker:
It was pretty obvious to all here in Boston that at one time Cardinal Bernard Law was being groomed to potentially become the first American Pope, but a lot has changed.
I don’t think we’ll see an American pope for a long long long time. Just the impression that a pope could be influenced by the last remaining superpower is enough (IMHO) to keep an American from being elected pope.

Now, just for the sake of speculation, my first choice would be Cardinal Ratzinger, followed closely by Cardinal Arinze. I would give Ratzinger the edge based on (wholly) my hunch that the next pope (many more years to Pope John Paul II!) will be seen as a “transitional” pope after our Holy Father’s current long pontificate (isn’t his among the top 5 longest in history?).

3rd longest in history. THe longest reign was Pope Pius IX’s 32 year reign

Kevin,
He is not acting…he is our Archbishop and don’t be too surprised if you see some really great things come from this man. Why did they bring him here then if he isn’t up to the task… Have you ever met him? Talked to him? This Archdiocese is one of the toughest in that the abuses are probably among the worst in the US and he was chosen to come…:twocents:

Hi,

I just didn’t think he was made permanent Archbishop; I thought I had recently read where they are still looking for an Archbishop for the city of Boston? And as I wrote in my post, Father O’Malley is a fine man and seems to be a good leader.

I can’t believe Cardinal Mahony’s name is one of the choices. God help us all if he’s ever made pope.

I didn’t vote, and to be honest, I don’t really care who the next Pope is. I don’t think it’s really an insult to the Holy Father to discuss his successor, but I have enough faith in Christ and the Church to not be bothered by the gossip of trying to guess the successor of the Pontiff; we’ll receive a Pope, and he will be the Vicar of Christ. That’s enough for me to know about him in advance.

Although, just on the lines of speculation about the American Church, is anyone familiar with Archbishop Burke of St. Louis? (I believe that’s where he’s located). I have some friends who were hired by him to work in the diocese of La Crosse shortly before he left Wisconsin, and from all of my experiences with him, and everything that I’ve heard about him, he’s an amazing and very holy man. I’ve heard a lot of talk about him possibly becoming the first American Pope at some point - again, it’s just idle speculation, but that alone speaks wonders about the man, and how he’s viewed.

Is he not the one trying to take away an independent church from a board of Parishoners who have owned it for 125 years?

None of the above are suitable. I suggest:

Ratzinger (an outsider because of age)
Arinze
Pell (but he is too new)

I didn’t care for any of the options. Particularly Cardinal Law, who enabled the sexual scandal attrocities in the Boston area. He should have been defrocked; not rewarded as he was, and definitely not rewarded any further.

Husar, he has the most experience dealing with priest’s wives. :rotfl:

Didn’t vote because 1) it’s disrespectful to our Holy Father, and 2) the choices in the poll aren’t good ones for a variety of reasons stated above.

BUT…If it should ever be an American (Fat chance)…than it should be Chaput.

It won’t be Mahoney because Christ promised us that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church.
The 2004 Chinese New Year Thanksgiving Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels started late on Saturday, January 24. One of the scheduled concelebrant bishops, the Most Reverend Gabino Zavala, never made it, apparently spending the entire service stuck in L.A. traffic. According to the archdiocesan newspaper, the Tidings, the principal concelebrant, the Most Reverend Ignatius Wang, was dropped off 15 minutes late on the corner of Grand and Temple Streets, being left to “literally sprint to the cathedral.”

Almost a half-hour late, Cardinal Mahony and concelebrating bishops and priests came trickling out on to the altar to take their seats, as an almost cathedral-full of principally Asian people was dramatically hushed to silence by pounding percussionists. With the rhythm, two sets of lion dancers menacingly danced down the aisle, eventually followed by two 50-foot dragons. Upon arriving at the sanctuary, the dancers had the two make-believe beasts circle the altar, leading the dragon’s head and tail under its body and round again to form a figure eight. Finally, the two dragons were set in place behind the crucifix, flanking it on either side, but in front of the road map of L.A. – the permanent fixture behind the altar.

I didn’t vote. I hope Our Lord spares the Holy Father to us for a while yet. I trust the Holy Spirit to send us the man we need when the time comes.

Mahoney would probably be the best of the choices offered, he runs a large and polyglot see, dealing with folks of many nationalities.
Ratzinger (an outsider because of age)
Actually his age could be a point of positivity if the cardinals have a difficult time deciding on the new pope in conclave.

But the next pope will probably be an Italian, religiosity has declined in the Roman province and a native in that see might well help revive it.
