Which parts of Jesus' death were necessary?

If we believe that Jesus’ death on the cross was necessary to save all our souls, to forgive all our sins, then why do we vilify the two people most responsible for his death, Judas and Pilot. Without them, Christianity would be very different. That leads to a second question. Was Jesus’ death on the cross necessary for salvation? Wasn’t His life, His testament to the truth more important than His death?
