I agree with your interpretation of how some historians might see it. And I found it, in Walsh’s words, on line, with respect to the Cardinals book. What I didn’t find was Walsh using the “with regard to the Papacy”. Which was what set me to looking. As I often do, with quotes on some subjects and from some people. And the first 3 citations of it I found were in a definite anti-Catholic context. Which ensured I’d dig deeper.

Lewis’ views on the Papacy were mixed.

So,I double checked and perhaps Walsh is the only Catholic historian quoting it,but three times now that I have seen .I have included the two sources and the third is his book on popes that i have before me.The last source site is the actual essay from which it is drawn from …You read that stuff ? Deeply academic. Hats off to you. The more accurate i get with this the less i say. Thanks again.ncronline.org/books/2012/09/papacy%C3%ADs-checkered-career and second last paragraph archive.org/stream/DeDescriptioneTemporum/DeDescriptioneTemporumByC.S.Lewis_djvu.txt

The first link is also where I found it, quoted by Walsh. I also found it, with the spurious Papacy connection, at a couple of anti-Catholic sites.

Yes, I read that stuff. With respect to Lewis, I’ve read him, in depth, for nearly 50 years. And lots of other folks and stuff, too. It’s a hobby. That, and collecting the books to read. I didn’t have (to my surprise) a copy of THEY ASKED FOR A PAPER, so I had to find it in SELECTED LITERARY ESSAYS. I prefer to read stuff on paper when I can. I don’t always trust the internet.
