I used to be a pretty hard-core Catholic (aka- vocation discerning, daily mass going, liturgy of the hours praying, 5-fold scapular wearing Catholic) but I left the Church a little over a year ago due to some issues I had with certain Doctrines. I’m trying my best to work out those issues because I really want to come back into the Church, but I’m not ready yet. My question is, would I benefit more by wearing a green scapular to help me work through my issues and get ready to come back into the Church or by going right back to my old 5-fold scapular?

Why not wear the Five-Fold and carry a pocket/wallet sized Green Scapular?

With plenty of medals additionally too. 😃

I think you can’t help but benefit from both and I do not think it is too much. I follow this advice myself. You will benefit from all the people praying the Green Scapular prayer (like myself), and being joined spiritually to the religious orders and people wearing the other scapulars part of the Five-Fold.

And when you finally step through the gates of home again the angels in Heaven will rejoice. 🙂

I have a related question. The rosary I carry has as it’s medal the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the obverse and Our Lady and infant Jesus on the reverse just like the Brown Scapular. Does carrying that rosary equal wearing the scapular medal? What about investiture?

From what I have read one has to wear the scapular medal, and too the scapular medal can only be worn after an investiture, unlike the actual scapular, which while one should be invested in it one does not have to be.

In general one shouldn’t replace a scapular with the scapular medal without a serious reason too I am thinking.

Each sacramental has its own “promises” and requirements to obtain those “promises”. My favorites are the Rosary and the Brown Scapular.

Thanks. I’m going to have to do a bit more research into scapulars, had one 50 years ago but remember nothing more than having one.

Shin is right. Unless you have a real reason for not wearing the wool scapular, you can wear a scapular medal.

For example, if you’re someone who is allergic to wool. Or, like me, you shower with your scapular, so it gets ruined in the shower.

However, if you want to still wear a scapular, but not the medal one, get a wooden one. Mine is two smooth wooden beads, one with an image of Mary and the other Jesus that wears just like a regular scapular.

Blessings!

I’ve been wearing the brown scapular for a few weeks now. It came to me in the mail along with a CD of the rosary I ordered and I was surprised to see it as I had just hear of what a scapular was recently.

I wear it as faithfully as I can but I read that you either should or have to be invested in it and say a rosary a day. The problem is a work 50 hours a week at a minimum and while I take time in my head while working to say an Our Father and a Hail Mary as much as I can I worry that because I don’t do all that’s asked of me for wearing it and shouldn’t be wearing it.

I’ve worn my scapulars in the shower consistently, and not had a problem with that myself. Some scapulars wear out quickly, some are made more sturdily (the link I gave you can choose extra-thick cords from).

Practically nothing made of cloth lasts forever when consistently worn. You will need another scapular eventually, so it’s good to have a few spares.

I wear the five-fold, however with a new one the dye tends to run from it for a bit when you shower in it, unlike the brown scapulars I’ve gotten which I’ve never had that problem with.

Since I tend to wear dark shirts, it’s not a problem with a black shirt when it’s still damp out of the shower, but your whites can turn pink from transferal if it’s wet and the dye from a new one isn’t washed out, so careful there.

I suppose one could also have two in use at once, and put on the dry one on out of the shower if one is concerned about taking it off.
