My sister (now a Nun) used to place a big sign on top of the television which read “WOULD JESUS WATCH THIS?”

Give station, date & time. Also what are good clean family cable channels. What channels do you have no use for?

My selections…

The Waltons, TV Land, 6AM central time.
Leave It To Beaver, TV Land
Candid Camera
EWTN Cable Channel
Turner Classic Network

I would like my cable company to reduce my monthly rates by getting rid of these cable channels…

MTV, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNBC, CNN, PBS, BET, Lifetime just to name a few of the many.

Familyland TV. Produced by the Apostolate for Family Consecration in Ohio. Fledgling network, but they work hard to provide programming for kids and families. Great organization.

Check them out, lot’s of family oriented programs.

We are very selective in our television viewing. As a family, once or twice a week we may watch Little House on the Prairie in the evening on the local Christian station. We do not have cable, so that reduces many of our options. We may watch a video together once in awhile, on a sick day or nasty weather, but again, we are very selective.

There are so many great fun things to do rather than sitting in front of the television. Play games, reading out loud to one another, going for a walk, gardening, etc… television is just an ugly distraction from the beauty of real life! 🙂

HGTV (home & garden)
DIY (do it yourself)
One note of caution, limit your wife watching, too much may be hazardous to your health. My sons are NOT impressed that I got their mom hooked on HGTV!!!

I would recommend that any Catholic family gather round in the living room once a week…shut the tv off and say the rosary together! 😉

That’s what we do!

My daughter has Little House on the Prairie DVD’s which we have, on occasion of bad weather and nothing to do, sat around together and watched.

We do not watch anything together as a family. We don’t watch it really at all. We don’t have cable. We don’t watch it.

My only recommendation is to NOT watch tv!!

I am so sick of the junk on TV lately. I used to watch all the cop shows (CSI, Law and Order, etc.), but now I can hardly stand the network channels. We don’t have any pay channels, because it is the same garbage as the networks, only with profanity and nudity to boot.

Right now, I watch the kids during the day and work evenings, so if I watch any TV, it is while I am cleaning or changing diapers. During the week, I usually, I have EWTN or Food Network on. I know they aren’t going to have anything questionable (except that Food Network tends to make me hungry, so I sometimes eat too much during the day 🙂 ). The morning lineup on EWTN is nice, because they play the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It helps me relax so I can tend to my 2 year old and my 2 month old without ripping my hair out :bigyikes:

My wife and I usually tape any night time shows on the VCR and watch them on the weekend. My favorite show is “Good Eats” on Food Network, because the host, Alton Brown, is as much of a science nerd as I am 👍 That is pretty much the only show I regularly watch (I even take notes because I am such a 🤓 ) My wife still watches a lot of the cop shows, but it is only while the kids are asleep. She also likes “Joan of Arcadia” which isn’t really too bad. At least when they say the word “God” it isn’t immediately followed by the word “D*mn.” I don’t watch it much because it has too much teen angst for my taste.

I recomend of course EWTN, Animal Planet & Spongebob for kids.
I usually watch these also.

Qynne Callahan;) :dancing:

I would recommend EWTN, Boston Catholic TV, Animal Planet, Home & Garden, Joan of Arcadia (pg13) and The Discovery Channel (pg13).🙂

BTW, a poster asked about 7th Heaven…I have serious reservations about the content of this program for children. From what I have seen of it, I don’t think it encourages good family values…Just my humble opinion…🙂

Little Mary:
Does anybody have an opinion about 7th Heaven?
I haven’t seen it but read a Catholic columnists’ review of it and it said that basically it’s like almost any other show in that the Dad is a bumbling idiot and the kids and wife are much smarter and usually override Dad’s judgement. Wish I could find it to site it but I can’t…
In fairness, here’s an interview with the star, Catherine Hicks, on Catholic Exchange:

Almost any program on PAX is good. 🙂 I wish we got EWTN but since it is not a basic chanel we don’t. 😦 I also like some of the programs on Discovery and PBS… you do have to be a little more careful with these stations.

Opinion about 7th Heaven:
I’ve watched it and it’s ok for teens and adults but not for younger kids IMO because they deal with very real issues like racism, teen pregnancy, drugs etc. It is very pro-family (the family has 7 kids!) Mom is home with kids and Dad is a Pastor. Although the Dad is very kind and helpful to others, I haven’t heard him talk about God too much and Jesus almost never. 😦 One thing that bugged me is the oldest son (nice boy) met a Jewish girl and decided to convert to her faith to get married. At first the Dad has “issues” with him leaving Christianity but in the end the whole family celebrated at the wedding - no big deal. If my son announced he no longer believed in Jesus I wouldn’t be dancing anytime soon!

Simplify your life and do everyone a favor: Don’t turn on the TV except in rare circumstanaces. Weeks and month’s should go by without having it on. It’s hard at first, but it does wonders.
