I believe I am at the point in my studies in Catholocism to visit a church near my home. My wife will have nothing of it as I have yet to convince her…we are currently members of a large non-denom church. Since I don’t have any friends that are Catholic, I don’t know if I am going to stand out in the crowd by not knowing what/when to do during a Catholic service. I really don’t want to offend anyone either! Am I going to stand out enough that it might bother some parishoners? Me…at the back of the sanctuary by myself looking confused…

Dear 1 Stephen,

Just stand, sit and kneel when the people around you do—with this exception: don’t go up to receive Holy Communion. Just do whatever other people are doing in their pews. People will not be looking at you, even though you may think they are. Unless you plan to wear some outlandish clothes, people will have no reason to know that you are not a Catholic. Relax! Besides, the Lord will be most happy to have you there. I pray that attending Mass will become a permanent habit for you. You are always welcome in our Church.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
