I hope that some of you lovely people can help me. I am a third year medical student that just formed a Catholic Club at my Med school (we got approved and everything). We are going to be a part of the Catholic Medical Association.

On October 18 we will be having a White Mass on the Feast of Saint Luke (the patron saint of physicians). I need help with organizing this Mass. The only Mass I have organized is my wedding and that was pretty simple. Does anyone know what the readings are for that day? Where can I find that. We might get a violinist to play (a friend of the family and she plays for the local symphony so she is wonderful) but I don’t know which hymns would be good and meaningful to a bunch of doctor-wannabes (:)) and phycians. I was thinkind the “Ave Maria” is beautiful and done of the violin would be absoulutely amazing.

Please Help.

“Adoramus Te, Christe” is beautiful beyond speech. Since you’re all medicos, “Ubi Caritas” is also beautiful, if you don’t use one that’s been through the Oregon Catholic Press sausage grinder.

You can find the daily readings of any day at the US Bishop’s Conference website: usccb.org/index.shtml

Here’s October 18th’s readings: usccb.org/nab/101805.htm

I found out there there are way too many requirements for planning a Mass that I better not offer advice on that. The songs at certain places are supposed to match the readings and what is going on. I have no clue in how. I would suggest getting in touch with your parish’s choir director and explaining what you are doing and asking if you can sit with the director for 20 or 30 minutes one day. After talking to many others in the parish that should have known what they were talking about, the choir director was by far the most knowledgeable on the mass and the appropriateness of different things in different places.

The other thing you can do is some googling and see if there are outlines/programs from others who have gone before you.

We have absoulutely no money since we are so new, do you think a chior director would volunteer his/her time to help us.

To be honest, I am leaving out of town in a week for a 6 week rotation so I will not even be at the Mass. I am hoping to delegate some of the work to the new officers, but I don’t want to over burden them.

I would think you could find a sympathetic one in the area who would meet with you over lunch. Do some homework first and come with some ideas in hand (or whomever you delegate the task to) so s/he doesn’t feel like you didn’t do a thing. Just call and explain what is going on and ask if s/he would be willing to help you by taking 20 minutes out of the day.

You might try calling the Office of Worship at the Diocese. They may have a suggested outline.

Or if there is a Catholic Hospital in the area check with their chaplain’s office.

I am not sure that either can help, but they are rather quick to try.
