I work in the fast food industry and yesterday, while taking payment through our drive-thru window, I was handed a Chick tract:eek: It was a local Baptist church.

No worries, I tore it up and threw it in the trash before anyone could see it.šŸ˜‰
I too have worked i fast food the majority of my career. I have seen more than I care to of these ā€œgospelā€ tracts passed to my employees. Anathema anyone?

I love Jack Chick comics/tracts. They are classic works of Americana art. Chick is like the Christian R. Crumb
One reporter has written a piece positing that Chick is actually Crumb in disguise.

It’s sort of tongue-in-cheek, but you can really see it. Imagine them idolizing each other and cribbing their best work by copying back and forth. They are both undeniably reclusive oddballs. If you’ve ever seen that film, ā€œCrumbā€, you will know what I mean.

That’s a rather interesting question, ain’t it? Well I’m sure that there are people who take his lies (I’m not mincing words here :D) as if they were gospel truth (pun intended). But then again, this is the world where there are people who believe that stuff that happens in the movies are actually real, so I guess reality is stranger than fiction.

Funny enough, Jack T. Chick is actually one of the reasons I came across Catholic Answers! 😃

P.S. No discussion about Jack Chick here in CAF will be ever complete without a link to this…erm, thread about him.legendary At least, it’s legendary for me.

For some fun, you should read the Chick tract parody that someone made about Cthulhu ( H.P. Lovecraft’s creation)

jackchick.wordpress.com/2009/07/08/chick-parody-who-will-be-eaten-first/
They should totally do one about the Flying Spaghetti Monster next. šŸ˜‰

Looking at it from an art perspective (hey, I’m an art student :D), most of Chick’s characters really all look the same. Also, for some weird reason, a good number of them look like as if their eyeballs are about to pop out at any minute. That being said, I never did comprehend the logic of his faceless Jesus. 🤷

To be honest, this wiki pretty much sums up my thoughts on his art.

Chick’s art is often at least slightly anti-Semitic, with evil characters often having large, stereotypical Jewish noses. The Death Cookie, an attack on the Catholic Church, featured stereotypically Jewish looking characters, including a Jewish looking Satan.

Chick also practices politically correct stereotyping in that many of his negative characters are overweight, and that virtually any overweight person in a Chick tract is bad. Thus overweight people join the large number of groups on Chick’s bigotry hit parade.

Also, male villains are frequently balding with feeble combovers, while True Believers generally have good heads of hair.

…Yeah, he’s really offensive in more ways than one.

I’ve only known one person who was a believer in Jack Chick, and that was this woman in my hometown (who has since died), and she once slipped a Chick tract into the freight truck delivering freight to my dad’s hardware store. She was known to be incredibly eccentric, incredibly religious, and seemed to live a "I’m not worthy of anything nice or new " lifestyle; she always bought second hand clothes that really stood out (her children, now all adults, have tried to buy her new clothes, but she refused to wear them), and one time she picked a broken string of Christmas lights out of my dad’s hardware store dumpster, which she then tried to buy replacement bulbs for from my dad (he assured her it’d be cheaper to buy a new string of lights, but she refused). She also had a ton of kids (many of whom turned against her), and apparently didn’t believe in medicine. Her youngest daughter (who I once got in a big argument over the ā€œSatanicā€ nature over Harry Potter and Pokemon, as she claimed it was) has cerebral palsy that could have been fixed when she was little, but her mom just took it as the will of God and did nothing. She did the same with another one of her kids who ended up dying very young because she considered his condition the will of God. While I don’t think this lady is unintelligent, I think she was so wrapped up in the fundamentalist mindset that she was willing to believe anything fundamentalist in nature.

As for my idea of the kind of people who believe Jack Chick, and I’m sorry that this sounds extremely judgmental (but face it; it could be true in some cases), are people who are maybe a little mentally slow. They may have the mind of a child, and are therefore entertained and believe Chick’s comics like a child would. And if you consider the amount of education level of some people, particularly in some parts of the Bible Belt (again, sorry I’m being judgmental and stereotyping), this might make a little bit of sense. I have heard people in the South can be EXTREMELY anti-Catholic, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this is where Chick tracts are the most popular.

Anyway, thanks for the replies so far! Lol I LOVED that parody of the Chick tract (Who Will Be Eaten First?). I once saw another parody that had a picture of Chick’s faceless God with the caption, ā€œPULL MY FINGER!ā€. And yes I have heard that Jack Chick is believed to be Christian Crumb, or at least just the pen name of an author or number of authors. He is EXTREMELY reclusive, doesn’t give interviews, and only two pictures of him are apparently known to exist, so it makes sense he may not even exist.

What’s interesting about who Jack Chick is trying to convert to Christianity, Karl Keating points out in ā€œCatholicism vs. Fundamentalismā€ that Chick tracts actually don’t convert a whole lot of people. They mostly only appeal to people who’ve been fundamentalist anti-Catholics for their entire lives. Keating says the anti-Catholics who do convert people away from the Church are far more stealthy, and they’re the ones you need to watch out for, as they use deception and lies about the Church, too (not as crazy as Chick’s, but they’re still misrepresentations; most of which come from ā€œRoman Catholicismā€ by Loraine Boettner, or to a more extreme extent ā€œThe Two Babylonsā€ by Alexander Hislop, which Chick actually uses as a source).

As for Jack Chick himself (or even if he exists), I wouldn’t be surprised if he knows he’s lying and hired Todd and Rivera on purpose because he knew they were quacks. In fact, here’s a theory I just came up with. Jack Chick supposedly wasn’t religious when he was young, but he claims he became religious later in life. But maybe that’s a total lie, and he’s REALLY an Atheist, and made all the tracts as an experiment to see just how stupid some fundamentalists are, and as a result make fundamentalist Christianity (and as a bonus make the Catholic Church in the view of fundamentalists) look bad, which Chick tracts ultimately have done. But even if that isn’t true, the one thing that is most likely motivating Chick is the fact he’s sold half a billion tracts, and whether he’s lying or not, we can definitely say he’s laughing all his way to the bank.

You (and Karl) make an interesting and I think accurate point there. Chick is really way ā€˜out there’ in his views that I think that he is really only revered amongst like-minded people, folks who pretty much share the views as he does. The ones you should really be watching for aren’t kooks, but those who are suave, attractive and silver-tongued. If we could make a video game analogy here, Chick is just the noisy mook.

Trivia: Jim Jones - yes, the Peoples Temple leader who conducted mass suicide with his followers in Guyana - actually used religion as a vehicle against religion (he was really a Marxist).

But then again, as unlikely as it seems, Chick may really be sincere in his views. In which case I am somewhat reminded of a quote from The Name of the Rose: ā€œthe Antichrist can be born from piety itself, from excessive love of God or of the truth, as the heretic is born from the saint and the possessed from the seer.ā€

Oh yes they are popular here. I had one left on my truck at work the first week I moved to NC (likely the Rosary hangiing from the mirror). I only wish they would have tried to put it on in person. I’m now the resident Catholic expert with the Knights of Columbus license plate on his truck (only Catholic in a building with 300 people). There are some darn strange ideas about Catholics here but I working on changing them in my corner of the world.
Chick tracts are good practice for starting apolgetics.šŸ‘

Sad to say, there are many people who consider both Jack Chick and Alberto Rivera to be authoritative and reliable. I think Chick actually believes what he writes and is reclusive out of fear from being on so many alleged hit lists.

I really hate to have to ā€˜break it to’ all you mainstream, educated Catholics out there, but I lived in the heart of the Bible Belt some years ago, where I ā€˜met-up-with’ Jack Chick and his venomous assaults on the Catholic Church, on Judaism, on virtually ANYBODY he doesn’t like or understand. Here’s the absolute problem ---- there are MANY Hundreds of Thousands of Bible-Thumping Southern Baptists who take every word he spreads as fully gospel truth! And of course, there are others as well. He ā€œinspiresā€ in a particular way, those who are undereducated, and who have been insulated by their prejudices to believe whatever negative they have come to fear. That’s a lot of territory!

That said, there are also MANY Southern Baptists – and others too, who have come to realize through their interaction with the Catholics who ALSO live in the Bible Belt, AND through the influence of EWTN, (surprisingly perhaps) that many of the lies he spouts can’t possibly be true. These people are seeing that their insular prejudices may need to be re-worked, and reconsidered.

What may be WORSE for the Catholic Church, and for ALL OF US, is the growing tendency for all people to accept their ā€œtheologyā€ from Hollywood’s films. Can you believe that ā€œSuperman, The Man of Steelā€ is being touted as the ā€œmodernā€ Story of Jesus Christ? Sadly, too many ā€˜unchurched’ get their ā€˜theology’ from poor sources.

The only way I see this growing tendency can be changed is for educated Catholics to do more evangelization and catechesis. I congratulate those who have these discussions with friends, neighbors, co-workers, and others. God will surely bless your efforts.

I remember this one from years ago…it’s legendary for me too and was glad to revisit this old classic. :rotfl::rotfl:

As a Catholic Charismatic I had a long time evangelical friend who I loved very much and we would pray together and study the bible together. With every topic I would show him how he was not reading the scripture correctly and he would say ā€œWow! You’re right! How did I not see that?ā€. He was my best friend for 10 years. One day, out of the blue, he was very hostile and angry at me and started accusing me of worshipping Mary. Come to find out that he had been reading material from Jack Chick. I had already known about Jack Chick so I pointed out to him that there was no Alberta Rivera and how all that information was a lie. It went in one ear- and out the other. Part of me (maybe it’s the devil trying to get me all riled up?) thinks all protestants are stupid now- but I don’t wanna think that so I pray about that. But it doesn’t matter that Jack Chick is a bold-faced liar and makes us ā€œfactsā€. If you want to believe that- you will believe it, no matter how many proofs you give them otherwise. Every morning when I wake up I check my email (it’s been 5 years now) and hope that I got an email from him- but it’s never there and I start every morning being sad.

Personally, I’d rather pray for them to learn the truth than try to analyze them. And I’ll include in my prayer thanks to Our Lord for giving me the great grace of being a Catholic.
I believe I will also offer up a prayer of thanks since I am a convert from the pentecostal church of god.

Bummer. Mr. Chick got my hopes up that the only influence in this world worthy of making decisions for others, was doing so. So they’re not? Now I’m depressed.

Jack Chick was instrumental in my conversion to Catholicism. I found an historical error in one of his tracts, having something to do with the crosses painted on the shields of Constantine’s soldiers. I then thought well if he can be wrong about something so easy to check up on then maybe he is wrong abouot ither issues that are not so easy to check. there were many hundreds more steps alongthe way but that was one of the first steps

Yep - the devil is whispering in your ear about Protestants. I was raised in Protestant churches, including Baptist for a while, and I view Jack Chick as a fraud. He represents Christianity about as well as David Koresh does. I have long thought that it was interesting that his medium for spreading his hate speech (cartoons) is the same medium used by white supremist groups to spread their hate speech. Many Protestants view him as a fraud. Remember what the scriptures say [paraphrased], ā€˜If they are not against us, then they are for us’, and ā€˜you shall know the [real Christians] by their fruits’.

He’s a fundamentalist Christian who is extremely anti-Catholic, who makes up (or has heard) weird claims about the Catholic Church (and society in general) and puts them in a comic format in an attempt to discredit the Church. The issue is, his claims are so outlandish, but some people still believe him.

My answer to why people believe him and pass out his tracts is for a few possible reasons:
  1. Some people are extremely ignorant and gullible
  2. Some people are extremely anti-Catholic and will grasp on anything to discredit the Church, even if it is entirely made up (which is a very un-Christian thing to do)
  3. Some people just want to troll
I think No. 1 covers the majority

Hanlon’s Razor -

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
