The scripture passages : Matt 12:46-50, Mk 3:32-35, Lk 11:27-28 all say “who are my brothers and mother” or “Whoever does the will of The Father is my brother and mother.” These passages are often quickly used by protestants to attempt to shake the Catholic’s faith and lead him away from the truth. Therefore many Catholics feel a bit uncomfortable with these verses when Protestants bring them up.

There is no reason to feel uncomfortable. These verses should be welcomed into discussion anytime. They more than most highlight the Blessed Mother’s holiness and the full force of the New Covenant! I will attempt a brief illustration.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me. If you had known me, you would know my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him.”
Jn 14:6-7

If a man loves me he will keep my word and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
Jn 14-23-24

I do as the Father has commanded me, so the world may know that I love the Father.
Jn 14:31

The last three verses give a great picture of the identity of the speaker in question in these verses.

“Who is my mother and who are my brethren?”
Mt 12:48

This statement is bringing the reality of his eternal family into question.

“Here are my mother and my brethren! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
Mt 12:49-50

Those who do the will of God will be his brethren. Theywill in a sense be unified with the Blessed Mother in doing the will of the Father, and with him in doing that same will.

“Blessed is the womb that bore you!”
Lk 11:12

This is a statement giving honor to Mary just because she is his mother. This is very similar to most protestant positions on the matter today.

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”
Lk 11:28

In other words Mary is blessed because she did the will of God by hearing, accepting, submitting. It was a choice she made to obey the will of God. Others are blessed when they do the will of God likewise. All these things come from the grace of God.

And Mary said, “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Lk 1:38

And Mary said, " My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
Lk 1:46-49

From the depths of her sould she reflects the Lord. She rejoices in God her Savior who from the time of her conception had redeemed her by his own special will so that she may be full of His grace. Therefore she would not be stained by original sin. It would be an abomination for the Lord to be housed in sin. We know she was full of Grace because of the words of the Arch-Angel Gabriel.

“Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you.”
Lk 1:28

And the words of the mother of John the Baptist:

“Blessed are you amoung women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
Lk 1:42

For to you is born this day in the city of David a savior, who is Christ the Lord.
Lk 2:11

We got a clear picture from the first three verses quoted who we were dealing with so the purity of the path in which he came into the world must not be questioned. Mary is a perpetual virgin.

This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; For the Lord, The God of Israel, has entered by it; Therefore it shall remain shut.
Ezek 44:2

She is full of grace as stated by the angel. So it is logical that God would give her the grace of protection.

For with God nothing will be impossible.
Lk 1:37

“Who are my mother and my brethren?”
Mk 3:33

“Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother sister and mother.”
Mt 12:49-50

For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren; saying, I will proclaim thy name to my brethren in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee.
Heb 2:11-12

When the time had fully come, God sent forth his son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might recieve adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the spirit of his son into our hearts Crying Abba! Father! So through God you are no longer a slave but a son and if a son than an heir!
Gal 4:4-7

Glory to God in the highest!
Lk 2:14

Jesus is Lord of all. King of Kings. He points to the holiness of his mother, a gift he gave her that magnifies him. He illustrates in these verses in so few words that he is going to share his sonship with his Church, who does the will of his Father.

Blessed be God

Blessed be his Holy Name

Dave,
Excellent post.

If I may, it is my opinion that Lk 11:12 has very little to do with the “womb that bore” Jesus. IMHO, it is completely a compliment about Jesus, with only minor overtones of complimenting the Blessed Mother. Let me explain with a different, yet similar, example.:

If I were to say to a successful doctor, “You mother sure is a lucky woman. She must be some kind of lady to have raised a child like you,” it’s clear that I’m not really complimenting his mother at all. Certainly, no one would reply, “Nope. My mother is just a nobody to whom I owe absolutely nothing; I did it all myself.” That is arrogant and prideful, and our Lord Jesus was neither. Of course Mary was blessed, but Jesus wanted to stress that it’s not family relations that bless people, but doing the will of the Father in heaven. By denying the woman’s statement, Jesus would have been denying either His own greatness or He would have been being prideful - both of these are unacceptable, so He must not have been denying the woman’s statement.

Couple that with the fact that the “Nay, rather” typically translated in Jesus’ response is actually the Greek word “menounge” (htmlbible.com/sacrednamebiblecom/kjvstrongs/FRMCONGRK330.htm#S3304 ). I have yet to figure out why this word is translated “Nay, rather” as opposed to “Yea, verily” like it is in Rom 10:18, Php 3:8 . As far as my limited Greek can tell me, it’s only bias that translates it Nay instead of Yea. If there are any Greek scholars out there who can clear this up for me or affirm my beliefs, please speak up!

Thanks Ryan,

That was very insightful. Scripture is very deep. I should have chose better words for the explaination of that verse. Thank you for pointing that out.

“Blessed is the womb that bore you!”
Lk 11:27 (I put 11:12 in the post! I’m sorry for that I should have glanced ovr it more before I hit send.)

Is a compliment to Jesus which gives honor to his mother just because she gave him birth. It does not imply that Mary (or anyone else) is blessed because she does the will of the Father. Jesus, being fully aware of this oversight took care of it rather beautifully.

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of god and keep it.”
Lk 11:28

“Yea Verily” That has a good ring to it! I’m glad you mentioned that. Is it true that it can also be translated that way? Any scolars to help Ryan and I with this question?

I like this thread!

I recieved an anti-Catholic book from a relative and one of the points they tried to make about Mary was “Jesus insulted Mary.” YIKES! Putting aside the question of Mary for a moment, Jesus was perfect–He commited no sin. But in an effort to knock the Catholic Church, the author of that book is ready to convict Jesus of violating the commandment to honor His father and mother!

Mary is the mother of Jesus precisely because she did the will of the Father. If she hadn’t done the Father’s will, she would not have been Jesus’ mommy. And we become part of Jesus’ family also by doing the will of the Father. Jesus points to the need for “doing” something, and all some anti-Catholics who claim to take the Bible literally can see is an insult to Mary. Amazing.

It amazes me…
Deu 21:
18 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
Jesus kept the law PERFECTLY, and still people think he publicly remonstrated with his mother! Unbelievable…
Some people can’t cede a point because, “The Catholic Church just can’t be right!”

Sorry if this is a little sour…I just get frustrated sometimes with horrible interpretation…

And Scripture is clear that Mary is our mother as well as Jesus’.

(Psalms 116:16 )
O LORD, I am thy servant; I am thy servant, the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast loosed my bonds.

(Luke 1:38)
And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

(John 19:26-27)
When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

The late Bishop Sheen commented that to measure a society, see how the mothers are treated. Sadly, there is alot of Truth to the statement. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.” Thanks and God Bless.

One of my favorite verses of our Blessed Mother is Rev 12:17:
Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.
Code:
We are her children, and we will be persecuted because she is our Mother. Thank you, Blessed Virgin, my life, my sweetness, and my hope!
