Yesterday, during the Homily I heard Father mention how Jesus though having a universal love for all of humanity, had a special attention and compassion towards people at the margins. With this being said, who in your opinion and perspective are among the marginalized and disadvantaged?

For me, I have to say it’s Foster Children and Youth as well as Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Victims.

How about you?

Peace and Goodwill

I usually think of people who have no one to stand up for themselves and can’t really stand up for themselves. For example, very elderly people, children (especially those born into poverty), the ill, the homeless, those who are desperate in poverty.

Well, the very elderly may be entirely at the mercy of those who are supposed to be looking after them; the same is true of children. What’s left of the middle class is marginalized because they are not receiving assistance, yet are paying taxes and are expected to hold up the economy for everyone else.

Disadvantaged children and the very elderly seem to be at the mercy of their very state of life, but that could also be an opportunity to grow in meekness and humility as in being in the margins in general.

In respect to that, I somewhat disagree. I feel like the Middle Class (and to an extent the Working Class) are hardy bunch, times can be difficult and rough for them but they endure (well what remains at least, I concede). Plus, there’s power in numbers and influence, for instance the working class and middle class can come together and form mutual aid organizations and fraternal societies as history has shown (i.e. Knights of Columbus). Furthermore, I believe the middle class, not the wealthy were the foundation of volunteerism, community and charitable giving, exemplifying the fact that they were the very foundation of societies. Even the relatively disadvantaged working class had opportunities to gain political power and influence as seen with the rise of Labor Unions like the Knights of Labor. Perhaps solidarity, fraternity and taking advantage of the freedom of association might be warranted nowadays.

Meanwhile I don’t think the same can be said for groups such as disabled(there are evident advocacy networks and very supportive families for them though like Easter Seals, Autism Speaks and the UCP) , refugees, prisoners, drug addicts.

That being said, do they get the short end of the stick [the middle and working classes] when it comes to political affairs and policies, definitely.

People with specific learning differences and “invisible” disabilities, mostly undiagnosed.

People with addictions in the present or past.

The lonely.

Anyone with different body language or way of talking or way of managing their life.

Anyone with some sort of criminal bit in their history however small.

In church terms, the under-catechised.

All the under-evangelised.

Anyone with chronic ailments.

Everybody in a “job” that doesn’t pay properly or has poor terms and conditions including working conditions.

People in poor housing even if it is sometimes expensive.

Those who have had shame heaped upon them from, or get cold shouldered by, relatives, parishioners or mistaken authorities e.g on grounds of race, religion, poverty, family broken up, many kinds of disabilities and differences.

Those that have been put down.

Those that have been discouraged from developing themselves, e.g those who were stopped from pursuing an inexpensive and wholesome hobby.

Those who think education should stop at 18.

Many people from families that have had any element of vulnerability in a former generation or generations.

People with insufficient work experience.

Anyone new to town.

nothing more easy, than to answer this trivial question.

The marginalized are the people in favor of same-sex marriage, especially homosexuals wanting to marry/marrying,

because they are under constant threat to be diminished by others neglecting their inalienable right to equal protection before the law and especially their right to marry,

and the people against same-sex marriage, especially abstaining homosexuals,

because they are under constant threat to be diminished by others carelessly bothering, harrassing and threatening their professional career based on imaginary and made up so called rights

and the people not caring either way,

because they are under constant threat to be diminished by others due to forcing them through pressure and so on to take a position regarding same-sex marriage.

Upps, maybe the answer is not that trivial at all!

For me the marginalized and disadvantaged humans are especially those which society or relevant parts thereof deems to be non-humans; one cannot get more bottom than that. Also, it has a rather great risk of being killed as one consequence.

My definition of marginalized is lacking in the ability or resources to advocate for ones self. There’s no doubt that the middle class does struggle, but they struggle with the resources needed to be successful . The have time, strength, education, support of family and collegues with similar resources, legal rights and the ability to defend them, generally some means of income, credit, etc.

Marginalized = those people who are treated as outcasts of soceity…those who are being judged…

Ex. The elderly, divorced people, unborn children, gay people, children with special needs, orphans, unwed mothers…

Each person has a story to tell. Pope francis is telling us not to judge on anyone’s circumstance. Rather, we should pray for one another.

Anyone attempting to avoid being scandalized by our secular culture.

I would say…the rich.

Because it would be easier to push a camel through the eye of a needle than for them to get into Heaven.

Though this does not encompass all who are marginalized, those who are stereotyped would be a (large) group of people.
