Who are the Seven Archangels according to the CC?

Ok, I’ve heard that there are 7 Archangels. Several sites, however, have different listings. Most include Gabriel, Raphael and Michael, but there is debate about the last four. I don’t know which ones to recognize as archangels and which ones not to recognize.

I’ve seen names like Uriel, Raguel, Zadkiel and Uzziel. Where do these other angels come from? Jewish tradition?

I’m also curious if originally there were more than 7 archangels, and if Lucifer was among the original archangels.

Anyone know more about this? 🙂
 
“Moreover, in the “Cherubic Hymn” of the Byzantine Liturgy, she celebrates the memory of certain angels more particularly (St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael, and the guardian angels).” (CCC, 335)

"Behind the disobedient choice of our first parents lurks a seductive voice, opposed to God, which makes them fall into death out of envy. Scripture and the Church’s Tradition see in this being a fallen angel, called “Satan” or the “devil”. The Church teaches that Satan was at first a good angel, made by God: “The devil and the other demons were indeed created naturally good by God, but they became evil by their own doing.”
Scripture speaks of a sin of these angels. This “fall” consists in the free choice of these created spirits, who radically and irrevocably rejected God and his reign. We find a reflection of that rebellion in the tempter’s words to our first parents: “You will be like God.” The devil “has sinned from the beginning”; he is “a liar and the father of lies”. (CCC, 391-392)

I would also like more info on this as this is my assignment for “This Evening w/ the Grandchildren”. Every evening just before bed my grandchildren call me and we talk about prayers and the Church, etc. They put me on speaker phone and usually fall asleep during our dialogue…They give me an assignment as to what they want to discuss for the following evening and tonight is on the Archangels…especially Michael and Lucifer.

Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael are the only ones named in the Bible. I’m not sure where the other names come from.
 
The Seven Archangels are liturgically comemmorated by the Eastern Catholic Churches of the Byzantine Rite on November 8, and in their Offices they are given names. However, there appears to be no consistency as to what exactly their names are.

Yes, they are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Moe, Larry and Curly.
 
There is a really good answer by Matthew Bunson on ewtn. He recommended the Psuedo Dionysius for reference they are as follows
Michael-who is like God
Gabriel-strength of God
Raphael-Healing of God
Uriel-fire of God
Jophiel-Beauty of God
Chamuel-He who seeks God
Zadkiel-Righteousness of God

Are these the seven angels referred to in Revelation…sorry I don’t have a reference but something like

…and the (emphasis added) seven angels stood before God and were handed seven trumpets… ??
 
“I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the the presence of the glory of the Holy One.”
Tobit 12:15

And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and bring you this good news.”

For years there is an order Sanctus Angelorum who have studied these and know that information. Since it is still waiting approval from Rome it is not published information. I have heard Ariel mentioned at one time I was told them all but don’t remember clearly, but the others listed from EWTN were not names that I heard mentioned from this order. I was told there was 7 archangels and each is in charge of one sacrament, which means there is still seven archangels. Lucifer excluded.
 
As these seven spirits stand in the presence of God interceding for the saints (as Raphael says) is it generally accepted that they are the highest ranking angels God created?
Michael alone is given some high praise:

He is called ‘one of the chief princes’ (or first of the chief princes…could be translated either way) in Daniel 10:13

In Daniel 10:21, the angel refers to Michael as ‘your prince’ when speaking to Daniel.

In Daniel 12:1, the angel refers to Michael as the ‘great prince who protects your people’ and states that he will arise during the time of great distress. (Which I think refers to the Church’s great tribulation at the end of the age…but I could be wrong).

Jude 1:9 refers to Michael as ‘the archangel’ and tells us that he disputed with the Devil over the body of Moses…showing that he has a very high position indeed.

Revelation 12:7 tells us that Michael leads the forces of Heaven against Satan and his forces.

It backs up what I had heard; that the Jews had cataloged them.

It’s interesting that this refers to the Book of Enoch since that is a non-canonical book that even St, Jude quotes in his letter.

The Book of Enoch (or Henoch) names seven archangels:
  1. Uriel, who rules the world and Tartarus;
  2. Raguel, who takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries;
  3. Michael, who is set over the most part of mankind and over chaos;
  4. Saraquael, who is set over the spirits;
  5. Gabriel, ruler of paradise, the serpents and the cherubim;
  6. Ramiel, whom God set over those who rise; and
  7. Raphael, who rules the spirits of men.
