Who can perform the enrollment in the scapular?

My husband is in contact with a man who is about to go into surgery and will most likely not survive. This man wants to be enrolled in the brown scapular, but we cannot get ahold of any of our priest friends or the hospital chaplain to do it–can a lay person enroll someone in an emergency?

Hi,

It must be a priest. But if the man is anointed, he’s ok. The sacrament removes all temporal punishment due to sin as well as the sins themselves. Just make sure he is anointed.
