Hi all,

I’m looking for your suggestions on potential speakers/leaders for a parish mission next Lent.

We’ve looked into Fr. Larry Richards, but his secretary was so rude to me on the phone that I think we won’t even bother trying to get him, now or in the future.

Are there any other great Catholic speakers out there that people have heard who are less, well, commercialized?

How funny you should mention this…

Our Parish just finished our Parish Mission last evening. It was led by Fr. Tom McElroy, SS.CC of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary based in Massachusetts. Four nights, one hour each night including Reconciliation on the third night. He was absolutely wonderful. I would highly recommend him.

This Priest (a Passionist) from Texas came to our Parish for a three or four night mission. He was very well rec’d. I bought a couple of his books.

He will lull you into thinking he is a softy the first night and then smack you with a two-by-four the last night.

The last night we had Confession. While there were 5 or 6 other local priests there to also hear confession his was the longest line. After awhile, people left his line as he took a great deal of time w/ each person. Even so, he still stayed several hours after the other Priests had left. Half way thru my confession I was begging that he’d just absolve me and let me get out of there.🙂

But seriously, it was as if Christ was there and really telling me how He felt about my sins. Very powerful. That gentle man (while always as gentle as you’d imagine Christ to be in the Confessional) is not for the soft hearted!

He also greatly appealed to the students. My daughter so liked him she recruited friends to come with her the second night and they wouldn’t have missed the other nights. She was one of the first in his confession line. While I felt exhausted when I got done, when I asked her the next day how her Confession was her only comment was “awesome.”

Father Pete Shavitz C.Ss.R. preaced our Parish mission about two years ago and was fabulous. He preached for 4 nights and packed the Church each night. Even my wife, a baptist really enjoyed and benefitted from his preaching. There is a short bio of Father Pete at:

If you do get a Ligorian priest be aware that they may push subscriptions for the Ligorian magazine which can really lean to the left.

We’ve had some excellent preachers in the past. Passionists are known for excellent preaching as well as Dominicans.

I am so sorry! He is my parish priest. I will say something to him, if you’d like.

.
if this magazine leans to the left then Catholic Digest is an organ of the communist party. I think you have another publication in mind. Catechetical and devotional materials, RCIA resources, pamphlets and magazines from Liguori are orthodox and reliable. Their catalog sometimes (rarely) advertises books and authors of other publishers which may be problematic, but their own offerings are fine.

I’m sorry. I wish I was thinking of another magazine. I subscribed for 3 years based on the strength and orthodoxy of their other publications. I’m still getting it. Oops on my part. It is not completely off the left end of the scale, but they definitely have their moments which really surprised me given the source. The first few issues that I received had letters from readers pointing out problems with articles and their “interpretations” of teachings.

I also had a problem with how the priest turned our mission into a huge commercial for the magazine that went on for quite a long time. He stopped so that people could fill out the subscription forms while he waited and turn them in. It went longer than the longest 2nd collection I’ve ever seen. He was a personal friend of our pastor, so I just bit my tongue. I bought the subscription because I know that they generally do very good work.
