Who gave us the teaching of hell, Jesus or Moses?

I have heard homilies where priests say Moses preached hell and damnation and now Jesus preaches love and forgiveness. When I study the scriptures, it is Jesus who gave us the image of hell and eternal damnation, not Moses. A very few Old Testament quotes somewhat relate to hell. Moses does give us the concept of spiritual life and spiritual death after physical life, but he does not really give us the concept of eternal torment in hell. However, Jesus many times drives home the images of eternal torment in hell in His teachings WARNING! Jesus Does Not Forgive All . I would certianly have to give Jesus, not Moses, the credit for giving us the image of hell that we know of today.

What do you think?

Please post supportive scriptures.

Peace in Christ,

I think God established the concept of eternal damnation within the Old Testament and agree that Jesus made sure the concept was clear to all that listened. Psalm 6:6, Wisdom 3:10, Ezekiel 32: 17-32.

Here’s a webpage that conveys the Judaic

conception of what Christians refer to as hell :

I have no difficulty at all accepting the idea that
God would destroy a soul for ghastly
behavior, but a lake of fire…for eternity?
