Who is allowed to purify the sacred vessels after communion?

We have 2 elderly priests who often serve Mass without a Deacon. After Communion, these priests are not able to purify the vessels because they can not stand for long periods of time. Often, lay people who have served as coordinators, not installed in any way, just volunteers, will purify the vessels at the credence table. I am concerned about this practice.
