I’ve searched the web for her but didn’t find the information I need. Is she a saint already? Blessed? Venerable? Some details about her life? Sources of info?

Please help. Thank you.

There is a lot to say about Catherine Doherty. She is a Servant of God and is up for beatification. This is my second time that I have tried to post you an answer but the computer is too slow and I have lost all of my writing.

Her apostolate of Madonna House of Combermere is one where one truly lives the vows of povery, chastity, and obedience. They live poor as the poor. Their apostolate may be a lay one but there are many priests. My spiritual director is an associate priest there. Here are some links and if you have any questions at all please feel free to ask! 🙂

I have done a study on her and another Russian woman who seem to be identical in so many ways. After reading so many of the books, I have fallen totally in love with her! I have known her for over 20 years and yet it just seems that the last 2 years have increased my love for her after my research. She has had much suffering in her life…and this is no surprise for someone who is deeply in love with Jesus! I am glad I could help…

Blessings,
Shoshana

I read Catherine’s books many years ago. The lessons have stuck with me always.

Shoshana,

I presume you’re speaking of Helen Iswolsky, of blessed memory?

Many years,

Hi Irish Melkite!

I hope you are experiencing a blessed Lent up to now. I have given up the computer but will answer chosen threads during this period of time. (on Sundays).

No, the Saint, according to Russian Orthodoxy, is Mat’ Maria Skobtsova. She passed away in 1945 giving her life for a Jewess during the holocaust. Both she and the Servant fo God Catherine Doherty have many, many similarities in their personal and spiritual lives. They were both born about the same time. Both were born in aristocratic families. Both had a passion for our Lord. Both married twice. Both had a husband who became a priest (Catherine’s husband became a melkite priest while Mat’ Maria’s husband became a Jesuit). Both suffered greatly due to many circumstances. Both almost lost their lives, more than once. Both were called to the same ministry of living poor with the poor. Both were asked by the Bishops to perform this ministry. Both suffered persecution from different priests while being totally blessed by their respective Bishops. Although, Catherine was brought into the Catholic faith as Mat’ Maria remained Orthodox, nonetheless, Catherine believed that the both East/West should reunite. This was her deepest desire. Catherine founded a community of a lay apostolate that consists of men, women and priests. All are committed by the vows of poverty (in the real sense), chastity and obedience. (My spiritual director is an associate priest from there). Their lives are so similar and I wonder if God does give us spiritual twins.

During my research, I aligned both women’s lives side by side with different quotes that matched each other. And it is unbelievable what I garnished. And I believe I missed a lot more. Since, that time, I have fallen in love with both women, with a love that causes me to love my God even more, even if I knew Catherine for many, many years… I guess I desire to have their own passion…

Blessings,
Shoshana
Irish Melkite, I presume you are Melkite and I mentioned that Catherine’s second husband became a Melkite priest. His name was Eddy Doherty, the famous Irish journalist from the US.

Thank you, Soshana, for the help. You see, my family has this tradition of picking a saint for the year of whom intercession is asked at the end of the family rosary. (Actually, it’s the saint who picks the person, not the other way around, so I believe) This year, I got this lady, but I do not know her. Now my meeting her finally has begun.

Doandei,

How beautiful! I believe that Roman Catholicsim has lost so much because we are so Westernized…especially after Vatican 2. I am aware of the byzantine and read of it, but it would take a lifetime to read everything. I must tell my spiritual director of your tradition.

As far as Catherine Doherty goes, would you like to read her books, etc.? I have many and I pray a novena to her every day for priests as she gave up her life for them as she so extremely loved them! Please let me know…I would be so blessed to do so for you. You can PM me and I could mail them to you if you give me your address.

This lady would share her passion for Jesus with you also…

Please let me know if I could help you more!

Blessings,
Shoshana

Donadei, does you your name mean a gift from God?

Catherine Doherty was a beautiful soul. She foudned Friendship House, a interracial center in Harlem and later Madonna House, a spiritual oasis. She was commmited to the poor, racial justice and promoted a deep spirituality.

Tell you what, Soshana, my eucharistic adoration is every Thursday, and with God’s grace, I offer it for the priests, missionaries, and religious, and for those who are called to the religious life and are wavering, in doubt, persecuted (especially young girls from Ukraine and Russia who cannot enter the convent), etc. I began my adoration at the height of the scandals in the clergy.

Yes, donadei means “gifts from God”, as we all are. Like what St Therese of the Child Jesus said, 'Everything is grace."

I actually bookmarked the sites you mentioned and last night, I began telling her story to my children over dinner, which I did not continue as I couldn’t remember all the details. Yes, I’ll PM you to give you my address, and then, I could read her story then to them.

God’s blessings to us all!

Donadei,

In case you did not receive your PM, your package is in the mail. 🙂

From Canada, they told me it would take 10 business days.

Enjoy!
Blessings,
Shoshana

I did not receive my PM. Thanks for the books! I’ll update you on what’s going on from my end. My children last night were asking again over dinner for any stories. Now I can tell them that Venerable Catherine is coming soon!
