God in his infinite power has allowed us the choice to turn our backs on him.

Ultimately some Orthodox believe that Hell will be facing the love of God - but because of how evil people react to his love it will be like a burning fire. SO they’ll still be in the presence of God - but not feeling the warmth of his love.
