GENESIS 4:1-2
“Now the man knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, ‘I have produced a man with the help of the LORD’. Next she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground.”

Note: Adam and Eve had two son, Cain and Abel. NO FEMALE CHILD…

But in GENESIS 4:17
"Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and named it Enoch after his son Enoch."

QUESTION: How and when did Cain met his wife? Did God create another one? Or did the writer of Genesis omit the female child?

Besides Cain and Abel, Genesis 4:25 - 5:4 tells us that Adam and Eve also had a son named Seth, as well as other sons and daughters whose names are not given.

Presumably, Cain took his wife from among these unnamed daughters of Adam and Eve.

If Seth is younger and Cain is older. Then Cain marries a younger one (that is just a presumption)

Now, if I would give such answer, then the Bible is an open book a source of self interpretation right? Yes, I could accept that as the probable answer: Gen. 5:6 …**But the question remains. Who is the mother? **

This is difficult, you see, as a former Protestant, my motto is like this: If you did not see, do not believe it!!! It just means, If I could not read the name of Enoch mother then I could go on for presumptions of details.

It is tragic and painful one. Now could still some one answer my question face to face? I mean meat to meat, steal to steal? I need a face value answer not a presumption or probably type answer.

Gen. 4-14
Behold thou dost cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy face, and I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth: every one, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me.
This is from the DR footnotes.
“Every one, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me”… His guilty conscience made him fear his own brothers and nephews; of whom, by this time, there might be a good number upon the earth; which had now endured near 130 years; as may be gathered from Gen. 5. 3, compared with chap. 4. 25, though in the compendious account given in the scriptures, only Cain and Abel are mentioned.

I think there were other children, other sons and daughters. However that begs the question of incest between the children, which has been debated here on other threads. Best to take the story of Adam and Eve as an allegory, not fact.

Who is the mother of Enoch?

ans: the wife of Jared (Gen 5:18)

two different Enochs ?

Cain’s wife’s son > Enoch (Gen 4.17)
Jared’s wife’s son > Enoch (Gen 5.18)

What is Jared’s lineage?
in chapt 5 it goes
Adam > Seth > Enosh > Cainan > Mahalaleel > Jared > Enoch > Methusaleh > Lamech

in chapt 4 it goes
Adam > Cain > Enoch > Irad > Mehujael > Methusael > Lamech

strange

That is strange, because I thought Noah was decendent from Seth and that Cain’s descendents got wiped out in the Flood. However, I was thinking about Noah’s wife and his son’s wives, and that they probably weren’t descendent from Seth.

I found this interesting tidbit about Noah and Lamech:

Apocryphal literature (which is not accepted in the biblical canon) has the story that Lamech raised him but Noah was not his biological son. Noah was the son of the “Gods”. The story told is that Lamech came home one day and saw a child that didn’t belong. He asked his wife who the child was and the wife told him the child was Lamech’s. Lamech was outraged. His wife pleaded saying it was his son and not one of the sons of “Gods” that the child was a son of man. Lamech went to his father to ask for help. His father than asked Enoch what his son should do about this mysterious child. Enoch told him he should name his Noah and keep him as his own for one day he will be chosen.

Yes similar names, different people, it was like Good and Bad, they were like counterparts, one was seen as a good lineage that tells the age of the people, the other was wicked and just says who was the father of who.

Noah was the son of the “good” Lamech, who really was his father since it says:

When Lamech was one hundred and eighty-two years old, he begot a son and named him Noah.

Hmmm it’s surprising to me that Enoch was with the bad line.

Seth’s great great great grandson Enoch (good line) is the one that walks with God and gets taken by God,

the same Enoch in Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death;

Cain’s son Enoch (wicked line) that gets the city named after him, doesn’t get translated.

**I love this forum!!! Thanks to all who contribute. It will shed more light and understanding in the scripture. Just don’t swallow the question. I only asked it as one of the most asked question in Talmudic studies.

Please continue what you think about it. **

Put this questions as if someone asked you this. Note that the person who asked you this is just a first time Bible reader. If you really Jesus Christ follower then show us enduring patience and love.

Enoch’s (good line) real counterpart is Lamech ( bad line). Lamech is the first mentioned to practice polygamy and represents the increase of sin. He say’s

Genesis 4

24 Sevenfold vengeance shall be taken for Cain: but for Lamech seventy times sevenfold.

Now remember what Jesus said when Peter asked

Matthew 18
21 Then came Peter unto him and said: Lord, how often shall my brother offend against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

*22 Jesus saith to him: I say not to thee, till seven times; but till seventy times seven times. *
**
Enoch is a sign of increasing holiness. Lamech is a sign of increasing sin.

Good observation! One other interesting thing I’ve noticed is that when the writer mentions people from the ‘good’ line - the line of Seth, they are always mentioned as having many offspring - in contrast to Cain’s line, where in many cases only one offspring may be implied. To return to Lamech and Noah:

When Methuselah had lived one hundred eighty-seven years, he became the father of Lamech. Methuselah lived after the birth of Lamech seven hundred eighty-two years, and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty-nine years; and he died.
When Lamech had lived one hundred eighty-two years, he became the father of a son; he named him Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the toil of our hands.” Lamech lived after the birth of Noah five hundred ninety-five years, and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy-seven years; and he died.

-Genesis 5:25-31 (NRSV)

Compare this with:

Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and named it Enoch after his son Enoch. To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael the father of Methushael, and Methushael the father of Lamech.

Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. Adah bore Jabal; he was the ancestor of those who live in tents and have livestock. His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of all those who play the lyre and pipe. Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

Genesis 4:17-22 (NRSV)
Here’s a little list I made. I employed the Hebrew transliteration for the names instead of the traditional English forms so it may be a bit disorienting, but here it is:
