Every mention of petra(rock) in the Bible. Judge for yourselves who the rock is…see especially Romans 9:33, 1 Corinthians 10:4, and I Peter 2:8. 😃

Matthew 7:24-25 (NABWRNT)
24 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.

Matthew 16:18 (NABWRNT)
18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 27:51 (NABWRNT)
51 And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split,

Matthew 27:60 (NABWRNT)
60 and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed.

Mark 15:46 (NABWRNT)
46 Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.

Luke 6:48-49 (NABWRNT)
48 That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built.49 But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed.”

Luke 8:6 (NABWRNT)
6 Some seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew, it withered for lack of moisture.

Luke 8:13 (NABWRNT)
13 Those on rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy, but they have no root; they believe only for a time and fall away in time of trial.

Romans 9:33 (NABWRNT)
33 as it is written: “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion that will make people stumbleand a rock that will make them fall, and whoever believes in him shall not be put to shame.”

1 Corinthians 10:4 (NABWRNT)
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ.

1 Peter 2:8 (NABWRNT)
8 and “A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall.”They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny.

Revelation 6:15-16 (NABWRNT)
15 The kings of the earth, the nobles, the military officers, the rich, the powerful, and every slave and free person hid themselves in caves and among mountain crags.16 They cried out to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,

Yes, the word “rock” appears in the New Testament many times and in many different contexts. In reference to Matthew 16:18, it’s Peter.

In Isaiah 51:1-2, Abraham is called a rock (Greek Septuagint: petra):

“Hearken to me, you who pursue deliverance, you who seek the LORD; look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were digged. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him and made him many.”

Of course, God is our eternal Rock. And, Simon Peter is only a rock because Jesus, the Son of God, made him so when he said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you [all the Apostles], that he might sift you [all the Apostles] like wheat, but I have prayed for you [Simon] that your [Simon’s] faith may not fail; and when you [Simon] have turned again, strengthen your brethren.” (Luke 22:31-32)

A metaphor, similar to the Simon-the-rock metaphor, is used to describe Eliakim, the new master steward of King Hezekiah’s palace, when he is called “a peg in a sure place” upon whom will be placed “the whole weight of his father’s house” in Isaiah 22:15-25. Eliakim, however, would eventually fail, like Shebna before him, and “the peg that was fastened in a sure place will give way; and it will be cut down and fall, and the burden that was upon it will be cut off.” Unlike the downfall of Eliakim, however, Peter’s faith (and the faith of his successors, the popes), because of Jesus Christ’s prayer, would not fail and the Church built upon Peter (and the popes) shall remain forever and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18)

You can’t mix the metaphors. We learn that in elementary school

While Christ/God may be the “Rock” in many passages, the metaphor in Matthew 16:19 is clear - it’s Peter.

We are all too familiar with the Protestant Petra/Petros argument. But, if Jesus was not calling Simon “the Rock”, why would He change his name at all?

I believe Simon in Aramaic means “grain of sand”. So why on earth would Jesus change his name from “grain of sand” to “small pebble”, if His point was to contrast pebble to large stone–as the protestant argument goes?

For those of us who believe that Peter is the rock, let’s consider this with Matthew 7:24-27
24 12 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”
The Church could not be supported on grains of sand (Simon), but would be well supported on rock (Peter). To me, this says that Simon himself could not support the Church (or any other self-proclaimed/ordained teacher for that matter), but only by the Lord’s authority and declaration. This happened in three ways–when Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, When He gave him the keys, and when he said “feed my sheep/lambs”

Of course, none of this means anything if Simon does not mean grain of sand, so I will try to find support for this.
Blessings,

Hmmm, which “rock”??? The word is being used in several different senses in the verses you pasted, and the OT references have been left out. Who is the “kepha” the Church is built on, Peter. Who is the cornerstone the builders rejected: Jesus Christ. What was rolled over the entrance to the tomb to seal it: a stone slab. And one could go on…Thanks and God Bless.
