In Genesis, it is said ‘Let us make man in our own image’…who is us? The Triune Godhead?

If you believe in Scripture----

At the begining of the book of John we learn that the “Word” is someone, not something.

1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.

4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;

5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.

And if you look at the begining of the book of Genesis you’ll notice God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Genesis 1
1 In the beginning God created heaven, and earth.

God the Father

2 And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the **spirit of God **moved over the waters.

God the Holy Spirit

3 And God said: Be light made. And light was made.

The Word of God, before He came in the flesh, Jesus

26 God said, “Let us make man in **our **own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild animals and all the creatures that creep along the ground.”

The Holy Trinity

Back to the book of John

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15 John beareth witness of him, and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me, is preferred before me: because he was before me.
16 And of his fullness we all have received, and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18 No man hath seen God at any time: the only **begotten Son **who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

Begotten =1. spawn, sire, breed, father, (esp. of a male parent) to procreate or generate (offspring).

Our children share our nature, they are human beings because we are.

Jesus shares His Fathers nature, He is God because the Father is God.

Jesus also shares His mothers nature,He is human because she is human.

All of us have one nature we are human.

Jesus has two natures He is both human and Divine. because of His parents.

And because Jesus is one with His Church His Church is both human and Divine.

We make up the body of His Church that is the human part. Jesus being one with His Church, and the Holy Spirit guiding it. That is the Divine part.

Through Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium. This is how I know Jesus is both, at the same time, human and Divine.

Check out this previous thread forum.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=86490 where I asked the same question. I was looking to just initiate discussion.

Whether one is Muslim or some other religion that does not understand/believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, one has a terrible time explaining or rationalizing one’s belief, unless one goes the currupt bible route, which opens up a whole new subject, our Lord’s words are and have been there for us from the very beginning.

With our Lord providing clues so early on who he is, why is there so many issues? Is it because of people’s desire for power that only they know God’s way when they were not the Church that developed our understanding of this “us”?

May I remark on a couple of your perceptions?
1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
And if you look at the begining of the book of Genesis you’ll notice God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
Genesis 1
1 In the beginning God created heaven, and earth.
God the Father
If everything was created by the “Word” ie. God the Son why do you mantain that the “Heavens and the Earth” were created by God the Father?
2 And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God moved over the waters.
God the Holy Spirit
In John 4:21-24 Jesus is talking about the Father (God the Father) and says that “God (the Father) is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” And we know also that God (the Father) is holy as per Scripture.

How many holy Spirits are there?
18 No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Begotten =1. spawn, sire, breed, father, (esp. of a male parent) to procreate or generate (offspring).
Our children share our nature, they are human beings because we are.
Jesus shares His Fathers nature, He is God because the Father is God
Matthew 1:20 tells us that the Angel said to Joseph in a dream "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take thee Mary thy wife: **for that which is conceived in her is of **(God) the Holy Ghost
This seems to indicate that the true Father of Jesus was God the Holy Spirit, which would relegate God the Father to an “uncle” status, not so?

I brought up this exact question as to the ‘us’ mentioned, and had come across the conclusion, that among the last 2000 years of worship the two most marveled were God and Satan. Christ himself mentions of Satan and his angels separate from God and his angels, so how shall it not be all men into home one of the vessels. As written in Daniel ‘some will wake as to ever lasting life, and other onto ever lasting shame and contempt.’

Does not truth and peace and love of God and neighbor merit everlasting life; as well as falseness and destruction looking for fault in neighbor only to accusing leave one in a state of shame and contempt.

From the Haydock Commentary:
Ver. 26. Let us make man to our image. This image of God in man, is not in the body, but in the soul; which is a spiritual substance, endued with understanding and free-will. God speaketh here in the plural number, to insinuate the plurality of persons in the Deity. (Challoner)

Yes, The Trinity.
Hi,
I’m not in disagreement, but that position generates a question for me, maybe you can help me clarify. I wonder if God is more complex than even the Trinity.

I think there is human-like life else where in the universe Created by God just as we were. I imagine there have been, and will be civilizations on other worlds. I don’t think it unreasonable to believe we are [not so unique](http://www.youtube.com/watch_fullsc...f=1&sk=ub9gEUrYjQpTpNJtRhWTHgU&fs=1&title=The Hubble Deep Field: The Most Important Image Ever Taken).

If it is not unreasonable to assume there could be other civilizations in the universe, it seems reasonable to assume they would have faced similar temptaions and fared differently (or the same) than we have, and others. There are many possibilities.

Could that same Spirit that was the man Jesus be another man on another planet at some point in the past or future? It is not a problem if we are unique, our personal Lord remaines personal, but if there are other civilizations that either did or did not require a similar Sacrifice:shrug: Both possibilities seem disturbing in some way.

I sometimes wonder if our view of God is as complete as we want to think. I recognize the danger of such thinking. I accept what I know to be True which is what has been revealed actually to us on this planet.

I believe in the continuity of Truth, and if there are other civilizations that Truth will be evident throughout the universe. I would think what ever that Truth might be in full, it should not contradict itself in any age or time. The ‘us’ in Genesis must be the same for all worlds wouldn’t you think? Or do you think we are unique?

Thanks

Yes, God is both more complex and yet, the most simple and singular - “I am”

Yes, continuity of truth for all time.

Another thought in addition to your suggestion there may be similar life elsewhere in the universe - perhaps human form as we know it here on Earth is not the final and ultimate evolution of God’s creation.

Well, currently I am of the opinion that humans are a created being, not an evolutionary one. I do not doubt some evolutionary development in early Earths microbial life, but for the most part I think all creatures were created pretty much as they are/were, with adaptation being the major changes species exhibit.

I suppose other worldly beings that share a similar cognative reasoning as we do might be more similar to us than not. I think it would be hard to improve on this particular form we have. Be that as it may, the Creator and the ‘us’ in Genesis being the Holy Spirit and Christ the only begotten Son; I would think would be understood either similarly by other beings, or in a way that would not contradict our current understanding of God.

Evolved creatures are still creatures.

I’m not saying that as an Intelligent Design-proponent. I think ID (as the theory has been explained to me) is both bad theology and bad science.

Personally, I’m fond of the Scientologist view that we were dropped off by aliens.

*This is all strange things to talk about considering no one has, nor could have, the slightest clue what they are talking about. Read Christ long dialog in the Gospel of John if you which to know that it was his wish for all those who believe in Him and keep Him simply to be as Him, He doesn’t wish The Father for them, and He doesn’t even mention the Holy Spirit in this passage. The thing that I marvel at immensely, is Christ saying that one will come to him, but must be denied so the scripture might be fulfilled. Christ didn’t come to make scripture, but to preach the word and fulfill scripture, therefore the answer must be in the Old Testament exactly who this ‘denied one’ is. *
