Thank you, anjou66. I should have clarified my question. What I meant was, will there always be an imam until the “end of the world”? For instance, one may assume there will always be a Pope (ignoring sede vacante) even until He returns. Of course, I think that is an assumption as the Church may continue to exist without one if need be. Note, none of our Popes disappear and reappear to the physical world(which implies following elections are nothing), so is it the same with the Imam? I suppose it also implies a secondary question as to is the occultation a perpetual concealment in the physical world, or is it a moving to another while still being able to interact.
The shia believe that the world can not be without imam, so he is concealed and kept alive miraculously until the time comes for him to establish his kingdom.

Except for the Ismailiyya who as i said before still believe in a continous rank of imams and the present aga khan is no 49.

The shias believe in two kinds of occultation, tghe lesser occultation and the greater occultation.
The lesser meant that the Imam spoke to his followers but only through messengers, the ordinary follower never saw the imam, only his chosen four messengers did until the time of the greater occultation when the imam told the last of his four messengers that the time of the greater occultation had arrived and there will not be any manifestation except by the will of God, and so the Imam dissapeared in the cave of Samarra.

The shias agree that this imam is still present on earth but since nobody knows who he is so he remains hidden but aware of the muslims affairs.

Of course the sunnis considers this belief just a mumbo jumbo and superstition.

Haven’t you heard? Unless you’ve communicated with the Boss directly, you’re supposed to be small fry
xcuse me, what d u mean? Who is the small fry? and the Boss?
from what I heard or read above at Famdigy’s post, Muslim were killing each other for believing that insulting or at least questioning the dearest companion of Muhammad is considered sin too, even though you may feel that whatever they’ve achieved during Muhammad’s time were only to get power and wealth as well as glory. It just makes me sad that Muslims are willing to sacrifice anything for the sake of false belief that they should honor or dishonor certain people for their position, or their false contribution or anything but their investment in their soul.😦
