Revelation 4:2-3
2 At once I was caught up in spirit. A throne was there in heaven, and on the throne sat 3 one whose appearance sparkled like jasper and carnelian. Around the throne was a halo as brilliant as an emerald.
I am not familiar with the reference “jasper and carnelian”. I suppose that this is a reference to an old testament scripture. I’m not familiar. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It is the throne of God.

Jasper- In Revelation 21:11, John describes jasper “as clear as crystal”, so this stone would have given off many colors when light went through it (like a prism).

Carnelian- A fiery red colored stone.

Another interesting passage about the the throne of God would be in Ezekiel 1:1-28 when Ezekiel was among the exiles in Babylon. “The heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.” (v.1)

A number of the objects mentioned in revelation are objects that would be found in the Jewish temple and would be familiar to John’s audience. A good commentary on revelation will help make those connections. I can check out several later and post back here.

Yes, Ezekiel 1:1-28, and I will add Daniel 7:9 and Isaiah 6:1. When I add these verses together I get all the inhabitants of Heaven testify to the Sovereignty of God as the creator and ruler of the univverse.

If you want to narrow it down to Jasper, I have the Holman Bible Dictionary?

“Jasper and carnelian” or “jasper and sard” or whatever… we’re not sure exactly what’s going on with those stones. Different color associations and even gem associations can be attached to the same names.

Jasper is a kind of transparent or translucent stone, but it comes in all different colors. But we do know that the Greeks thought of “iaspis” primarily as a clear GREEN stone. Whatever “sardios” was, they thought of it as an opaque red.

The early Greek and Latin commentaries on Revelation are very sure of this. They continually compare the colors to the two big wraths of God: Noah’s flood (green like the green sea and the green iaspis) and “the fire next time” (red like fire and the red sardonyx or carnelian). The two judgments idea probably originally came from the (mostly lost) commentary by Tyconius (who was sort of the Donatist Scott Hahn, and whose interpretation was so good that St. Augustine and other orthodox writers rescued it).The two judgments idea appears in the Revelation commentaries of St. Primasius, St. Victorinus, and St. Apringius, and it shows up in Pope St. Gregory the Great’s homilies on Ezekiel. (Probably more places if I knew more.)

Since the rainbow is also green like emerald, you can see that there’s probably a relationship to the green flood thing, and certainly to the green iaspis.

Both “sardios” and “iaspis” seem to be gems used in the High Priest’s breastplate, so they also both must symbolize one of the Twelve Tribes. But I don’t know which ones.

Here’s a good picture from an early medieval commentary (St. Beatus of Liebana’s) which quotes the earlier ones. Very heavy on the green.

Another take on it. Very heavy on the red, but the Throne itself is green.

A picture of the same thing drawn in a different style. They went with rings of red and green color around the saints around the throne, with the whole thing as a sort of rainbow halo thrown off by Jesus.

A very restrained use of red and green.

This is from the Aquinas Study Bible

4:2 in the Spirit: see verse 1:10 throne one sitting: The one sitting on the throne is the Lord Jesus Christ. In Rev. 1:13, He was seen walking amid the seven candlesticks, diffusing His gifts of grace; so here He is seen sitting as a judge concerning the merits of each one individually. (Haimo of Auxerre)

4:3 jasper is the color of water and sardine as fire. These two are manifested to be placed as judgments upon God’s tribunal until the end of the world, of which judgments one is already completed in the deluge of water, and the other shall be completed by fire.(St. Victorinus) St. Ambrosius Autpertus regards its redness as among other things indicating mercy. Cornelius a Lapide regards sardine as signifying love or charity.
rainbow: Moreover, the rainbow round about the throne has the same colours. The rainbow is called a bow from what the Lord spoke to Noah and to his sons, that they should not fear any further deluge in the generation of God, but fire. For thus He says: I will place my bow in the clouds, that you may now no longer fear water, but fire. (St. Victorinus) Haimo, Primasius, St. Ambrosius Autpertus, and others say that as a rainbow is produced by the refraction of the sun’s rays in a cloud, so in the present case that this sun is Christ the sun of righteousness; that the rays are the truths of his holy Word; the cloud is the Humanity, or the saints, or the preachers of the Word; the various colors are the various truths of that Word, or virtues of the mind, which present to the view various lights. Joachim says that the rainbow is the Holy Spirit.
