Who started the Catholic Church?

My daughter is in Freshman AP World Geograpy at a public school. One of her test questions for a test tomorrow is “Who started the Catholic Church?” Her teacher’s answer, “John the Baptist”. My daughter is very indignant that this is incorrect and we agree also that it would be attributed to Jesus and/or Peter to whom He said “upon this rock, go build my church” (haven’t had time to look up the scripture yet). We need an authoritative answer for her to give on this test. Can you help us? (And please correct us by all means if necessary). Thanks!
