In reading the bible, I’m curious about John, 21:20-23;

Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me! So the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

Is this symbolic? Is it there to illustrate the will of Jesus?Or did the beloved disciple (John?) not die? I would love to hear your responses.

The Beloved Disciple is John (in one sense) and every disciple (in another sense).

John the Apostle did die of old age in exile.

John wanted us to all see the we are all called to be the beloved disciple of Christ, to be Jesus’ friend, to stand with Jesus through good times and bad, to have Mary as our mother, to rest our heads on his chest, etc. The Gospel of John is the gospel of love where John tries to show us how much Jesus loves us and wants to be loved by us.

We as the Beloved Disciples continue to live today.

John is the beloved disciple. His is the only first-hand Gospel account.

John was the only disciple that died a natural death. All the other appostles were martyered. Did Jesus love John an more than any of the appostles? I believed Jesus loved them all the same. It was John who had a closer relationship with Jesus. The closer we come the more blessed we will be be. Jesus blessed John with a longer life. 👍
