Who was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary? In Mt. 1:16 it says it was Jacob and in Lk. 3:23 is states Heli is the father of Joseph. Is this the same person?

Heli (Joachim) is the father of Mary. Jacob, son of Matthan is the father of Joseph.
Matthew’s genealogy is tracing the bloodline of Joseph, Luke’s genealogy is tracing the bloodline of Mary. Both Mary and Joseph are descendants of the David.

Another way of reconciling this is to say that:

Jimmy Akin is of a different opinion and agrees with the historian Eusebius:

Some have tried to deal with the issue by saying that Luke’s genealogy really doesn’t give Jesus’ lineage through Joseph at all, but through Mary. It is true that Mary was a descendant of David (cf. Rom. 1:3), but neither of the lines given in the gospels is her line. The text does not support that idea. Luke states that Joseph was the son of Heli, not that Mary was the daughter of Heli, and in any event, this does not account for the question of Shealtiel’s two fathers.
This article is worth having a look at, IMO. It has a nice chart showing how the lines diverge and come back, and how Joseph is said to have 2 Fathers.

Both solutions have been proposed, and while there is evidence and arguments for either side, I think ultimately we’ll never really know this side of heaven, and can think either way.

The Catholic Encyclopedia article for Geneaology of Jesus gives that argument, while not necessarily supporting it.
