Caution:
that’s not the vatican site. it’s the work of a con artist
official vatican’s ip is 212.77.1.243

212.77.1.243/news_services/press/vis/dinamiche/d3_en.htm
has nothing to do with Levada

if you open both 212.77.1.243/phome_en.htm and 212.77.1.245/phome_en.htmthe 243 one says “Search on site” and the 245 one says “new search engine” however if you click on it , then else where, the 245 one changes to “Search on site”

if you move your mouse over the alpha and omega sign in the real site the icon changes to “the liturgical year” however on the phony site it doesn’t change, so are other icons

If I may offer a little experimentation, I went to both the “243” and the “245” home sites (“phome_en.htm”). In the “243” search box–that is the official Vatican site, according to another poster–I entered “levada doctrine faith”. The second result in the list was “vis-press releases (English)” and I clicked on it. I was taken to the “245” press release address about Levada being named “as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.” So the “243” site will direct you to the “245” site.

Also, with my browser (Mozilla something) the icons changed to text when I hovered the mouse over them on both sites. What browser were you using?

Most larger sites (in terms of traffic) have “mirrors” - i.e., more than one server actually hosts the site. This is extremely common. It is not “phony”. It is not “vicious”. Both servers belong to the Vatican.

As is often the case with such setups, certain obscure features are only available on certain servers. In this case the Bollettino (an extremely obscure service that only a few press folks and nerds like me use daily 🙂

One other note, the Vatican found it necessary with the death of Pope John Paul II to make some rather hasty adjustments to their server setup because of the huge traffic loads they were getting. There are likely to be several more adjustments (mostly not obvious to the end users) as they continue to clean up their setup.
