My parish is looking into this Whole Community Catechesis program as a possibility for a new program in the parish. I don’t know anything about it. Anyone have any thoughts, positive or negative?

The idea behind it is that you are not only teaching the chidren but the adults as well. The main catechesis is done by a master catechist in a large group of mixes generations and then they break down into smaller groups where the adults then help the children learn the material on their level. The idea is to allow the parents to be the teachers of their children. Our diocese will allow it but not to take the place of formal classroom catechesis of children but in addition to it if the parish wants to do it.

I think it is a good idea to have sessions that are multi generational at times, but the problem is that young kids can’t sit through a catechetical sesssion aimed at an adult level. I am not sure what the kids do at that time.

From what I understand, this relies heavily on home teaching. I fear that too many parents aren’t going to be interested in do their part.

Also our parish wants to heavily stress the ‘personal experience’ part of this, in small groups. I fear that might spell disaster.

Whatever happened to just teaching people the faith?

Hello Thomas,

I recommend reading the following article by catechetical expert Donna Steichen:

She is very trustworthy and she gives you great details about the WCC. 👍

Peace to you,
Kev
I can’t quite tell if she’s ripping on the program or not. She does present both sides of the story on it though.

She echoes my concerns about the ‘faith sharing’ part of the program being stressed over the actual teaching. Sharing together and building a community is great. But what happens when people start sharing ideas that aren’t catholic and go against the church’s teaching?
