What’s the thesis of the book? What exactly is Sheed’s meaning by giving it that title?

Can you describe in your own words the basic message of the book?

The title always bothered me when I was having issues with depression and I felt like Sheed might be saying you ought to be acting happy in life or you can’t be a Saint. That’s not something a depressed person wants to hear.

Disclaimer: I have not read the book. I’ve never even heard of the book. I’m about to do the incredibly stupid thing of commenting on a topic I know nothing about 😂

No I just want to say that my guess based purely on the title is that it’s to refute the idea that happiness must be sacrificed to become holy. Since there are rules involved in our religion, people sometimes think good Catholics are no fun. I actually had a very sweet little altar server tell me he didn’t want to be a saint because he wanted to have a little fun in life. I thought that was kind of sad, that he had the impression that the two are mutually exclusive.

Anyway, just my two cents on the title of a book I know nothing about 😅

I haven’t read “Saints Are Not Sad”, but I have read several other of Frank Sheed’s books…and he in an incredible orthodox theologian. I’m a big fan. Therefore I’m willing to bet that this work would also be amazing, or at the least nothing bizarre or heretical. Just my quick thoughts.
