How can one explain why Catholics have the corpus of Christ on their crucifixes and not a bare cross?

Thanks,
Shirley

Dear Shirley,

Catholics have the body of Christ depicted on the cross because He died on the cross. It is His death on the cross that makes the cross a relevant symbol for Christians. We don’t hang pictures of a person’s house or bedroom on our wall. We hang a picture of the person! It does make sense to have a crucifix as well as just the cross.
