So I’m almost 11 weeks pregnant with our 5th child. Normally I am a very small person but something’s up with this pregnancy - I am huge. I look like I did when I was 5 - 6 months pregnant with the others. My doctor said not to worry - there’s only one baby in there but still… for those who’ve had lots of babies… did you get BIG really quickly?

CM - I don’t have an explanation for why you’re “so huge”; I just want to say that it’s wonderful news - congratulations and God bless!

I actually did this with my third pregnancy. I got up out of bed one day and there was baby! She did turn out to be a big baby though at 10 lbs. 4 oz. and 22 in.

Not to worry, if baby is big that is okay. God has a plan for you and your family 😃

Brenda,
Only one word comes to my mind: OUCH!

It sounds like you are just carrying differently this time. I found by the 3rd pg that I popped earlier, in fact 12 weeks was the longest I could keep it secret. My 3rd was 10 lbs 12 oz though. By the end of that pg I could barely walk unassisted. After that we started inducing just a bit short of my due date to keep the weight under 10 lbs. All my babies have been good sized though, the smallest was 8.5.

I would venture to say your muscle tone isn’t what it used to be. So long as your doctor isn’t concerned, neither should you be.

When I first saw the title of your post, I immediately thought I would respond with: because you eat too much.

Then I read your post, and I laughed because, of course, it was a pregnancy. No one ever asks why they’re overweight. 🙂

Can you recall what a popped tin foil pan of Jolly Time Popcorn looks like? That was me. Big practically from the start.

I got bigger and bigger with each child, I have three and am a small framed, 5’1 tall woman. Each of my babies weighed over 9lbs. I have a short torso and I guess the only way the babies could go was STRAIGHT out.!

What does your Doctor say? Women often see larger after each baby because of lessened abdominal muscle tone, this can also be affected by age, how closely teh babies were in age, activity level ect.

A larger than normal uterus* can* signal Multiple babies (twins, triplets)

It can also signal medical problems, I hate to worry you, but Il’m sure you already know:
Gestational diabetes, *or *a medical complication with the amount of fluid in the baby’s cranium. Your concerns warrant close supervison by a doctor. An ultrasound ASAP is important, It can diagnose problems which can be treated. Prenatal and neonatal medicine is growing by leaps and bounds, and early detection of treatable problems is crucial. I personally wouldn’t allow a doc to do any tests that could jeapordize the health and well being of the baby, but that is just my personal feeling about prenatal diagnostics.

More than likely everything is fine, but make sure your doc takes it seriously, and that you make it to your appts. regularly.

If it is a case of muscle tone, often YOU feel bigger but your uterus measures right on track.

" A person’s a person no matter how small." -DR Suiss

I love that quote and use it all the time. I would love to find a bumper sticker with it!

PS. you are very blessed to be expecting your 5th child. I have 3, but it appears that we will need to adopt if we want more children later. I would love to have more children! I miss being pregnant, huge and all. I just love the whole experience, even the miserable aspects, it is just such an amazing experience! Pregnant women experience the fullness of life, especially during labor, Joy coupled with fear, pain with joy, self sacrifice coupled with so much gain. There is nothing like seeing that beautiful little person for the first time and then taking them home and helping them grow! Every time we are allowed to have a child, God is giving us the opportunity to change the universe forever.

Carol! Relax!
My wife is having our 4th and she is HUGE!! She was very neat on the first three but for some reason she is very very big now. She is only 19 weeks and looks as if she is 30!!

She is a petite lady but is very suprised herself at how big the ‘bump’ has become so early on. like you there is only one in there too.

Relax and enjoy.

Yeah I was GINORMOUS with my 3rd baby,

Thanks all for your encouragment. I agree that even if I have to be HUGE, a wonderful baby at the end is worth it all!

I too have large babies - right around 9 pounds which is alot for 110 pound me. I guess it might be the muscle tone thing… probably totally shot at this point. I was getting discouraged because I looked up some sights online that said, “by 5 months you might be discouraged because you aren’t yet showing…” And I’m thinking what the heck? I’m not even 3 months and I already look like I swallowed a pumpkin ! Then I got to thinking that maybe those sights are geared more toward young, first time Mom’s rather than older, already got a van full, ones like me?

At any rate, my doctor said no worries - but when I go for my next check in 3 weeks we’ll see if he feels the same?

Blessings to you all,
CM

Well, I would just like to say congratulations on your 5th baby!!! That’s great! I just had my first 5 months ago. So I really don’t have any advice or words of wisdom. Sorry! I plan on having our second in a few years (that’s what I plan, who knows what will actually happen!) He was born pretty small (6lb 12oz). I guess the next baby could be bigger or I will be from what everyone is saying. I just remember complaining at 4 months that I still wasn’t showing. I’m sure by the time I’ve had a few more, I’ll be eating my words. 🙂

Probably your muscle tone ain’t what it used to be. It happens.

I ask myself that question every day and I don’t have your excuse. I gained over 50 lbs with each pregnancy, and now weigh more than I did when the last one was born. I tell myself it is just post-baby fat and I will work it off with exercise, but since my baby just had her first at age 30, that is probably not going to happen. She got bigger all over, but tummy was not that big, and everytime she had an ultrasound he was “hiding” so even in the delivery room they did not expect him to be as big or old as he was. 10 lbs, and 9 1/2 months, they revised their estimate up once he got here. Maybe it is just the way your baby is lying in there, and he is showing off.

Dear Carol,

My daughter had the same problem and was attended by a gynecologist who specialized in pregnancies. He kept telling her that everything was ok.

One day at five months, she felt something come forth and called her young son and asked him to look near her pelvis and tell here what he saw. It looks like a big balloon, mom — and shortly afterwards the balloon burst. The twins were born and did not survive since their lungs were too underdeveloped. She had them baptized and they lived about a day.

Sometimes I get upset that she did not sue the physician, who should have performed tests to detect this incredible buildup of fluid - it could have been siphoned, as a specialist we consulted afterwards informed us. Hindsight, eh?

Please assure yourself with another opinion, if necessary, that your enormity is not due to excessive fluid.

This is very sad, what a devastating loss! It might have been prevented. Follow your gut instinct. and make sure the doc is taking it seriously enough to run some tests, especially if your uterus is measuring big. Make sure the doc tells you the measurement and check to see normal measurements for your stage. If you feel like something is “wrong” don’t let the doc dismiss it. You are pregnant with your fifth baby, you know your pregnant body by now and what is “normal” for you.

When I was delivering my third baby the doctor kept blowing everything off. I am thankful my friend was there noticing that I was yawning like crazy and that the baby’s heartbeat was slowing down, I told the doc I felt like I was going to pass out and she didn’t believe me. My friend finally said “SHE NEEDS OXYGEN NOW.” and put it on my face. It did wonders, but at the time I liked the feeling of floating because the pain was less…My husband said, honey you have signs of hypoxia (he flies so has trained in this" but the doc just acted like everything was fine. Follow your instincts.
