I’m just asking for a little initiative on the part of my family. I know I’m everyone’s maid, but why can’t they just notice that the trash is full, instead of putting one more thing on it that doesn’t fit?

Am I the only one with this problem?

In my house, it’s more that no one notices the toilet paper roll is empty and just can’t figure out how to work that highly technical contraption. I’m currently undoing my family’s unspoken assumption that the high points of my life involve cooking, cleaning and laundry. In other words, everyone is now expected to do their share, everyday. It’s a little bumpy, but going better than expected.

I don’t even mind taking out the trash. But it would be so nice if my teens could walk a few feet and put the clothes in the laundry hamper rather than on the floor.:tsktsk:

Sounds what I’ve been going through lately. I have made some progress, but I’ll admit I they seem to think I’m a ruthless, heartless Witch, with a B, when I point out that they, too, have able hands…

i wouldn’t mind toys being put back after the child is playing with it instead of leaving it on the floor, under the couch, in front of the door… and my children wonder why their toy stash dwindles… and ebay is now my best friend.

Evidently you are the only one in the family who sees it as a problem! 😛

Try washing only what is in the hamper, leave the floor droppings where they are. At some point, they will notice. Tried this years ago, it worked.

Well, I used to get irritated about clothes being left on the floor (by my husband), and toys here and there, fingerprints on the coffee table, etc. One day I realized that my husband could be taken in a split second and if that would happen I would be wishing his clothes would be lying there one more time for me to pick up. And one day my children will go off to college and get married one day, and those tiny little fingerprints that annoy me won’t be there anymore to wipe up. So, with that said, I do my housework, and I do it with a BIG FAT smile 😃 !

No you’re not, my slobs instead of putting one more thing in, our garbage has “babies” the boys including the 60 year old “boy” (DH), will just take a Foodtown plastic bag and lay it near it or on top of the lid or if a 12 pack of Coke is empty you can fill that up too:rolleyes: I like my kitchen clean, so I gave up. At least they are very good about bringing cans out to the curb and bring them back. I think they truly feel (thank you DH) that if it’s inside the house, especially the kitchen, it’s women’s work.

I would only wash what actually made it to the hamper or laundry room (they were required to bring their own dirty clothes downstairs and to carry the clean stuff upstairs and put it away, until they were old enough to do their own laundry). When they ask where is my shirt, say, try looking on your floor.

Well, when my older kids were teens, come age 16 they did their own laundry. And, if I found their load left in the the washer, I’d just take it out and leave it in a laundry basket for them to deal with whenever.

Having them deal with their own laundry really helps in the sock dept. Their socks don’t get mixed up with other people’s socks. Also, it familiarizes them with the complex technical aspect of the modern washer, and the intricacies of sorting by color… 😃

Gosh can I relate! My husband never takes out the trash. I have to ask him before he does. I’ve let it overflow on purpose before just to see if he will take it out ----Nope! I just needed to vent about that!

I also get down about things not staying clean, but you are oh so right that it can all be gone soon and someday, the children will be out of the house and I’ll miss them. Thanks for the reminder!

Our trash doesn’t have babies, but sometimes my husband tries to help with the dishes by jamming them into the empty sink. Then I have to unpack them (by now the undersides of the plates have gotten messy from the plate underneath them), run some water, and start from scratch. But at least he’s trying  and sometimes if I just leave him to his own devices, he somehow manages to get them clean “his way” 🙂

In my family growing up, my mom always did the laundry for all four of us (2 parents and 2 kids), but when we got old enough, we did our own ironing. And we would always help out with folding things that didn’t need ironing. My mom would dump the folding on her bed and everyone would gather around, and it would be done in five minutes! The first time I did my own laundry was when I was married  but I got the hang of it!

One hubby checking in ducks

To be honest, most of the time it doesn’t even register that the trash is full because my mind is not on it, nor am I looking when I put something in it. (I will not make “babies” though. That’s not right. If I actually notice it’s that full, I change it). 95% of the time my wife has to ask me to change the garbage, which I do.

No amount of training will ever cure me of this. My wife will never be able to get me to take the initiative in changing the garbage. She’s learned to accept that this is just the way it is, and so she asks, without the annoyed tone of voice.

If you have a husband who simply doesn’t notice it is full, you will likely never get him to notice on his own. Accept that and just ask him to change it when it needs it. Getting annoyed by it won’t make any difference to him, but will further aggravate you, so you’re only hurting yourself. These are the sorts of things we have to learn to live with in marriage.

In my house, I’m the only one who puts the toilet paper on the roll. I used to get annoyed about it, but I realized that for the ten seconds it takes, it’s really not worth getting worked up about.

No need to run – this isn’t a thread just for women! You make a good point about the garbage, kudos to you for figuring out how to change the tp roll.

It’s one of those reverse stereotypes in my home. I’m much more of a neat type than my wife for the most part. The tp roll and toothpaste cap are my job, it seems. Works for us. 🙂

Yes, quite an accomplishment for a man… 😃 Esp considerate since women use up more of this item… 😉

Don’t worry, like you, I have the same problem, and with the toilet paper. I spent 4 hours and $40 doing 24 loads of laundry last night. Laundry is an ongoing fight about who has to do it. It usually ends up being me.
