Why are the 10 Commandments as listed in Catholic tradition different from those listed in the Bible. For example, when Jesus is asked what is the most important Commandment he states “Love the Lord your God with all your heart…” this is not the same as the Commandment listed by our church (i.e. I am the Lord your God: you shall not have
strange gods before me). Also, 9 and 10 in Catholic tradition both deal with coveting and one is redundant with don’t commit adultry. I listened to a Jewish scholar talk about the Commandments as listed in the old testement (below) and there seems to be good reason to list them as shown without contradicting any Catholic doctrine. If fact, the listing below goes a long way in helping undertand other concepts in scripture where our listing obscures them. For example, the first five can be paired with the second five showing five concepts (e.g 1. Love God and 6.Don’t murder = respect for one outside of one’s self. And it equates to the theme of Genesis)

- Honor/Glorify your Father and Mother
- Do not commit murder
