Why is it so hard for non-believers to respect Christianity? Why do they have to put down what we believe in and talk so badly about God? I mean if you don’t believe in God that’s on you. But why disrespect the Church and that which SO many people look up to, respect, and live by? It’s just so messed up.

I was on this other Forums website the other day trying to look up information on “Work at home jobs” cause I’m trying to make some money working from home, right? For those of you that have never tried that, there are a lot of scams out there that fool people. So the website was called “scam.com”. Their a forums website that discuss all forms of scams, right? Well tell me why as I’m scrolling down the list of forums, I see one that says “Religious Scams”. And I’m thining to myself “Religion isn’t a SCAM! Why would people consider that a scam?!” And somehow I knew this was going to be pointed mostly to Christianity. And I was right. People were on there bad-mouthing God, Jesus, Mary, you name it. Talking about how Mary got drunk and got pregnant by some roman soldier, talking about how Jesus isn’t truly the son of God and there couldn’t be more then one God, talking about how God doesn’t even exist and that if he does why is he so cruel by allowing all these bad things to happen to good people, and so much more.

And I was obviously offended. So I jumped in there and tried to defend Christianity and to try to explain to these guys (to my understanding) in regards to all the things they were talking about. But these guys were so incredibly hard-headed. They kept ignoring the main points I was trying to make and arguing about something else I had said and a bunch of other things. And no matter WHAT I said, it did not make a difference. These guys do not believe in God and nothing would change their views about it.

I mean how anyone can live a life without beleving in God…I just don’t understand. But I know not everyone is going to unfortunatly. But just cause you don’t believe, doesn’t mean you have to bash on those who do. I mean that’s really messed up…

If we’re right, and the non-believers are wrong, then the non-believers are going to be in a heap of trouble after they die.

This realization breeds defensiveness.

I’ve also noticed that most of the angry anti-Catholics have been invalidly divorced and remarried. Realization that their marriage is invalid in the eyes of the church also breeds defensiveness.

Something to think about.

There is no point in trying to reason with people who not just unbelievers but full of hatred. They have – whether knowingly or unknowingly – bought into the devil’s lies about God.

It is by grace of God that we, any of us, can know that God is good, creator of all things, all powerful, that He loves you and me and even his enemies, that he wants all people to get to heaven.

In the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve disobeyed God by breaking the one commandment He gave them, not to eat of a certain tree.
But Satan helped them along by telling a monstrouos lie about God: said that God’s reason for the commandment was an evil one, that He didn’t want people to be free, that if they disobeyed they would themselves be like God, wouldn’t need Him, wouldn’t want Him, could themselves be the judge of what is good and what is evil. Adam and Eve should have known better but they didn’t. And all their descendents from then to now (with one exceptiion) inherit a tendency to rebel.

We have to accept that God is trustworthy by faith, but when we do, our minds can open out onto the true picture of God, of ourselves, of our great destiny for Heaven, where nothing evil can go.

The one exception is Mary, who did not inherit the sin of Adam, but, like Adam and Eve, was directly created by God to be a fit dwelling for Jesus Christ to enter into the world. Adam and Eve said “no” to God; Mary said “yes.” So Jesus entered into this world, not to judge it, but to save it. By grace we can be children of this new covenant. But God still has enemies, and as St. Paul said, they are not just flesh and blood, but prinicipalities and powers, that is, satan and other evil spirits. They had their “day of triumph” on Calvary, but Jesus’ death is not the end of the story.
He resurrected, He conquered all the devil’s power. He established a Church that will last to the end of the world.

There are still enemies and they use the same weapons: hate, lies, envy, earthly power, they enslave who they can, use people as catspaws and mouthpieces. They can’t harm God, or make Him go out of existence, so they try to take away people that God made and still loves. We should pity the people in the devil’s power, not hate them, and God Himself said we should pray for our enemies, because until the very last breath a human is still able to repent and be saved. It’s just very hard to do if one has lived a cruel and hateful life and persecuted others. But, as Jesus said, 'What’s impossible to man is not impossible to God."

So don’t get too upset, but add them to your prayers.

I know, I understand.😦

But, look at things this way…it confirms Jesus’ message to His followers–the world hated Him, they will hate us. (Christians)
In an odd way, I find comfort knowing this…I hear His words quietly echoing, when I experience persecution for the faith…or when I see people disparage Christians, as a whole. Take (some) comfort in knowing that Christ spoke of exactly this!! :o

Well you have to look at the past historical issues with Christianity, the way people were treated who didn’t want to devote to Christianity, how many people were killed in the name of GOD, and many people feel that “if there was a GOD then HE wouldn’t let all this happen! There wouldn’t be such pain, or agony, poverty, etc”! But what they don’t understand nor wish to learn about is why people have chosen to kill using His name, why there is so much pain and suffering, poverty, etc…

What they don’t care to hear, because again it’s their choice is the fact that GOD gave us a freewill and people are allowed to use it however they choose and will, thus conducting this world into the chaotic circumstance it is…

So they don’t even care to hear nor care to believe because they choose not too…Not much we can do there but yes of course if Catholics, Christians, religious people are correct, which I don’t doubt in GOD at all, then well, God forgive them and bless them!!! 🤷

Why does anyone hate anyone? Hatred is not reserved for non-Christians or non-believers. There are mean hateful people of all stripes and creeds. You happened upon a certain group, but there are a lot more out there. I’m sure I could find websites that were anti-Chrisitain by non-Christians, anti-Catholic by non-Catholic Christians, anti-any religion than mine websites, anti-semites, anti-everything. But you know what, I bet I could also find sites where people of diverse beliefs actually get along. The internet has made it possible for anyone and everyone to post their view - hate filled, stupid, brilliant or just plain boring (and everything in between) for the entire world to see.

People often hate what they fear and/or don’t understand, generally people/things that are different from them. I’m from the South originally and grew up in a time of intense racial tension. Folks who felt they were good Chrisitans freely used the N word and spouted hate filled rhetoric about folks whose only “crime” was to be a different color.

Please understand that I am not in any way defending the folks you are talking about. I’m just sharing with you some of my thoughts on hatred in general, on why people are so mean to each other - I’ve given and give it a lot of thought. I’m active in social justice work and am constantly working to get along better with my fellow man regardless of any differing beliefs.

In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that I was a Christian for 99% of my life - both Catholic and Prot. For very personal reasons that I will not go into here, I am now an agnostic. But all of my family and many of my loved ones are Christians. Spirituality is very personal, vital and close to the heart. It is a large part of who we are. We should never attack each other’s hearts, regardless of our differing views. But there are always bully’s out there who make themselves feel big by putting others down. It is a sad commentary on humanity.

Not all non-believers are like that. Just like not all christians are respectful. It depends on the person, not their beliefs.

I am not sure how to answer that question. Perhaps I should ask my husband who is the nastiest meanest man on the planet.

Why do you care? If you have Jesus on your side, what more can you want? Those who are bitter, hard-headed, and cruel are likely missing the peace you enjoy.

Ya see, that’s my whole point. You stated that your agnostic, but your not on her bashing the beliefs of other people. And that’s what I wish could happen. Even though you don’t believe the same things other people believe in, doesn’t give you the right to bash on them. I mean that’s just cruel.

But I know that God is watching and He knows of all this evil. And I know in the end He will be the one to deal with them, not us. So all I can do really is just pray for them and hope that in the end, they’ll learn the Truth…And The Truth is God…

Why will a person in south beach choose to wear a bathing suit outside, while another in mexico choose tshirt and shorts? Why would a bigger child pick on a smaller one? Why would a man covet thy neighbor’s wife? Why can’t we all get along? Same reasons as before, because they can! Yes fear is the biggest weapon anyone can have and be blessed with, fear can turn a sane person into a hiddeous creature…Fear can torment people and turn them into making the most wrongful decisions of their lives…Fear usually helps those who might not feel as if they fit in to “hang” with the wrong crowd just to get some attention or affection…Fear makes people hurt and hate…Definitely…Fear is a very scary thing! If someone is afraid for their life they will kill to defend themselves…It’s a dangerous thing!

If someone hates it’s because they choose, they choose to fear and to take it out any way they can because they don’t choose other wise…Sometimes that’s how they were brought up and it’s hard to straighten a crooked root, not impossible though, as long as the person is willing to change his/her ways but very difficult…

Well in either case, curiosity sometimes gets the best of people!! And maybe the OP doesn’t really care just curious to hear other’s perspective on the subject…👍

Exactly may GOD bless these people with hatred in their hearts and with wrongful doings and feelings, may He have mercy on them and may the rest of us be prepared for His coming…

See, that’s XZACTLY what I tried to explain to them. I tried to tell them that Evil doesn’t come from God. Evil happens as a result of people’s actions. I told them that God gave us Free Will so we could either make bad choices or good choices. But if someone makes a bad choice, the person is the one to blame. Not God.

But then they went on saying that “If someone makes a bad choice out of a result from free will and free will comes from God, then God is evil. He could’ve made it so that we wouldn’t have free will and people would never had made bad choices”, and “God may not be the one to blame for the bad choices. But he has the power to prevent bad choices from happening. He can interfere and stop people from doing something bad. But if he doesn’t, that makes him just as responsible.”, and “If someone makes a bad choice, that’s on them. But what about all these innocent people who are raped, and murdered, etc…?” And honestly…I didn’t really have an answer for that last one.

I mean I tried to explain to them that for some reason bad things happen to good people but I don’t know why. But I’m pretty sure God has a plan for all that. I mean he had a plan for his own SON getting crucified and beaten to death. Which was the most TERRIBLE fate known to mankind. But He had a reason for that. So he has to have a reason for why bad things happen to good people. But I don’t know what that reason is. And of course that wasn’t enough to satisfy them. Cause the way they see it, if God is good, he would do everything he could to not let good innocent people suffer. So, I didn’t really know what to say that. But then again nothing I said had an effect on them. So, it’s not even worth it…

In answer to the title of thread, I would tend to look at Original Sin and Free Will.

I learned early you have worry only about pleasing God. All the rest doesn’t matter. Didn’t he say those who follow him would be hated by the world. Such is the order order of things. The key is not to take it personally and pray for them.

Ignorance is bliss…First of all if GOD would have made us not have free will then all we would be-would be PUPPETS not human beings, we would be like a toy, not beings with our own souls!!! Think about it, let’s pretend something, OK, let’s pretend there is such a thing a COMMON SENSE, see these people don’t seem to have one!!! 😉 So along with the FREE WILL THAT OUR WONDERFUL LORD GAVE US HE ALSO GAVE US THIS OTHER WONDERFUL YET seemingly UNDESIRED GIFT OF COMMON SENSE!! 😉 So GOD is not the one to blame for anything or any wrong choice anyone makes, we are…He guides us with his RULES, and LAWS, His COMMANDMENTS, Through the SCRIPTURES, and through COMMON SENSE, He shows us the right way to live under HIS love and care we choose other wise…He doesn’t choose for us. HE made us in His image and granted us the gift to EARN our way into HEAVEN, obviously, it’s our choice if we want to make it there or not by the insane things we choose to do. That is insanity and ignorance to say GOD is responsible, for HE is not. He loves us and forgave us by giving His only SON, our Lord Jesus Christ for our salvation, what FATHER does that? Only one trying to show us to change our ways AND START OBEYING AND USING OUR COMMON SENSE!! If a person decides “today I am going to kidnap someone and kill them!” That’s their choice, not the DEVIL’s choice, I can’t agree with people that say “OMG they did it because the devil made them do it that’s the devil’s work right there!!!” Because even though someone might not believe a human being is capable of committing such an atrocity to just wake up and go hurt someone means its the work of the devil, it’s not true, human beings are capable of such wonderful things and even worst ones as well…It’s our natural, animal nature to make wrong choices, to go with lust, and to try and inflict pain, the need to over exceed and prove ourselves leads to primate instincts, the point is that in all this FEAR takes place as well…If you think about it, some of the worst crimes ever committed were done by people who lived in fear, fear because they were not happy with themselves, or life, or people around them, their choice, NOT GOD’s choice to be that way…And some were harmed during childhood and know nothing else, that GOD will take into account but even though again, a person does have a choice, if a hurt person chooses to seek help, then the evil done upon them will eventually be worked out, based on that person’s choice, again, free will and common sense!! Not GOD’s choice?! About others that are innocent victims, obviously, it wasn’t because they chose to be victims, nor their choice to be hurt, but because another human being took it upon themselves to cause that person harm, to injure that person, to make that person suffer, why didn’t GOD stop it, because unfortunately there are some things that must stay as a mistery to us, unfortunately bad things happen to good people, why because that’s the way things are…God always has a plan whether it seems wrong or right, whether it’s painful or not, but God makes the right choices for us through our common sense, and when both are working together that’s where the true human love and care shows…Sometimes faithful/devoted people are murdered, some found with rosaries in their hands, WHY? You might ask GOD, well God had another plan for those souls and wanted those souls in his Hands sooner rather than later…It’s their time to go… and we must respect God’s decisions and choices…“BUT WHY in such a terrible manner? GOD DOESN’t CARE!!” On the contrary, at that moment that person made the choice to hurt these faithful souls and GOD decided to end their suffering and took them HOME…To a more peaceful place…It might seem that the terrestrial form of death these people might endure or go through is too painful to realize, but sometimes the wrong choices of other humans, makes GOD want to fight more for His children and bring them to Heaven even faster…

I mean I tried to explain to them that for some reason bad things happen to good people but I don’t know why. But I’m pretty sure God has a plan for all that. I mean he had a plan for his own SON getting crucified and beaten to death.

Yes GOD is good, that’s why he sacrificed His only SON, to show his terrestrial children that HE is willing to do all for us as long as we are willing to accept Him, love HIM, care for HIM, invite Him in, believe in HIM and do as He wishes…Those that do not believe can not begin to comprehend, of course it’s painful to ever see a loved one hurt, or pass away, and the mourning is a long and terrible way to live life, but the hope of seeing them again after we mourn is even more worth it…My mother told me the other day “why do we cry when a loved one dies! That’s wrong we shouldn’t we should be joyful that our loved one is one step closer to heaven than we are and one step closer to our LORD.” I said yes of course but the soul and the love for that person is the reason that GOD loves us so much, because He knows the love we have for each other is what makes us be in HIS Image as well, He loves us so much and wants us to love one another as He has loved us, so when our loved one passes on, we have the right to be sad, because even though this person might be in the GLORY OF OUR LORD, we are not able to share our love any more, or our laughter so it hurts us…After mourning we will be happy knowing and believing this person is closer to GOD and in a better place, at least we hope, but it doesn’t mean we can’t feel for this person for their departure…

I learned early you have worry only about pleasing God. All the rest doesn’t matter. Didn’t he say those who follow him would be hated by the world. Such is the order order of things. The key is not to take it personally and pray for them.
Yes you are right, we shouldn’t worry about those that hate, nor anything else, but free will, again, leads us to be curious and the way to be human is to ask questions and be curious…

Because I play online games and have for years I have a large number of friends worldwide I might not have otherwise.

Many of those people I would consider not just nonreligious, but anti-Christian.

I have been told, on more than on occasion, that if Christians were actually like me they might consider it but that I don’t “really” represent Christianity.

Now I’m not saying that for personal gratification I’m stating it because from those conversations here is what have learned over the years (I have discuss this with a local Philosophy professor and she see’s the same thing in many of her classes).

I thought it was getting better in the late 90s and was but we both agree it’s getting worse again, perhaps that will change.

Here is the problem. Many even “Christian” homes in the US don’t really do much in regards to their children’s religious education. Thus most of what they learn is secular…

From a secular standpoint what do the loudest Christians sound like to someone uneducated in the teaching of Christ? Bigots…

Example - Someone has a friend who is gay, they really aren’t religious and know their friend is a “good” person. They turn on the TV or read a magazine only to see the “God Hates Fags” people protesting a soldiers funeral.

Example - The little bit of education they do have taught them that Christ loves people. Yet all they here when they flip through the channels is hate for different groups or that somehow God punished America in 9/11 for certain groups.

Example - They have heard a little of the Sermon on the Mount but yet every time they turn on their TV they see Televangelist asking for money while wearing big diamond rings and owning multiple houses…

Example - Many also see a lack of education in some believers, people who can’t defend their faith (Protestant or Catholic). This is pushed often by some in the mainstream media (Bill Mahr - I watched a few weeks ago when a person defend their faith in a few sentences and put him in his place to which he replied “but you are the average person”)

With no one explaining why on the critical points and the far right televangelists spewing Biblical misinterpretations to prove their point, who can blame them?

In my opinion our problems with Christianity and defending it to our fellow Citizens all stem from Jerry Falwell and the others who got involved into politics in the 1970s. Before then Ministers stayed out of politics. When we began mixing the two things started to break down because now we have throw another volatile topic into the mix.

I watched a person at a political rally recently say that they couldn’t vote for x candidate because his mother didn’t believe in God and his father was a Muslim - even though the candidate is a professing Christian.

Now this isn’t the politics forum so I’m not going to talk about the right or wrongs politically or if someone is or isn’t… the POINT is that to all those people who saw this video this person just excluded everyone who wasn’t born into a Christian home from ever being “worthy” So much for spreading the Gospel?

People see stuff like this and they think, why would I want to be like those people?

OUR JOB is to SHOW people that while those people may indeed be Christians (we aren’t going to judge them) that we don’t believe they are promoting the teachings of Christ. I know homosexuals who definitely don’t agree with the Church’s teachings but understand it and can see why it makes sense, even if they disagree.

Christianity in America has turned from a Faith that promotes hope to one that promotes Fear. How many things on the Protestant channels are talking about the “end times” and the anti-christ? What is the biggest Christian fiction series ever, again FEAR.

Christ told us not to be afraid. Christ told us to love our brothers and turn the other cheek. He did not tell us to use torture, to kill, to invade sovereign nations. He told us to take care of the poor, widows and children (even though the poor would always be with us).

Christ message has been politicized and we HAVE to change that or our numbers will continue to decrease over the years.

Pope Benedict 16th had said that any time the Church gets too political (or at a time even military) we lose focus on why we are here and what we are to be doing as Christians.

Yes, the legalization of abortions started much of the politicization of Christianity in our Nation but us trying to fix that one issue has caused so many other problems, including the alienation of many youth and young adults.

We should always fight for life, but otherwise I believe we need to remove our Faith from our Politics as much as possible so that we can vote for what Christ would want us to do, not just against abortions. I say that because in the past 30 years the two are often mutually exclusive.
