Why are readings during the mass different than in the bible?

A non-catholic told my husband that Catholics do not read scripture in its full content during mass. I did compare last Sunday’s readings to my catholic bible. I did notice there were some words, maybe not too significant of words, but words were missing from the readings. Why is that? How do we respond to that statement?
 
It sounds like you’re describing a simple difference in translation. The lectionary for Mass uses the New American Bible translation. Unless your friend is an expert in ancient Hebrew and Greek then they are in no position to be arguing that the NAB translation is inferior to the Bible they have.
