Why are so many Japanese people becoming recluses?

Is this one of the effects of atheism, secularism or?

From the article, it appears to be more related to Japan’s highly intense educational system, rigid social structures and attitude toward mental health.
 
I am aware of a goodly number of people in USA who rarely or never leave their homes or apartments. Often it’s due to agoraphobia, anxiety, side effects of drug use, or some other mental or physical condition.

It does not necessarily mean they are “isolated” as some of them are very active online or have family living with them or checking on them, or other people coming to see them.
