Why are the sponsors called as godparent?

Literally, the word a godparent is weird to me, when it was used against humans. I can understand if it was spiritually parents instead of godparent. Why would you call other people a godparent? Don’t you find anything weird?

Am I the only one who struggle with the word a godparent, when it was used against other humans?

That’s simply the word the missionaries coined when they came to England some 1400 years ago so they could communicate with the local population. You may not like their choice, but the word has done a pretty good job for over a thousand years.
