WHY do we need bells to jar us at the elevation of the host and the chalice in the Consecration at Mass? It destroys the sense of the mystical, of reverence, of prayerfulness. Bells to me signal alarm, suspension of previous train of thought, change in direction. I am struggling with a strong sense that this is off-putting at the least, or even revolting (depending on the obnoxiousness of the choice of bells and gusto of the bell-ringing altar server).
