Why are there no OT manuscripts older than the Dead Sea Scrolls?

Maybe this is a stupid question. But there have always been Torah readings, correct? Why is it that none of the Torah scrolls have survived, and the oldest we have are the DSS?

They weren’t written on the most durable “paper” (for lack of a better word).

The Dead Sea Scrolls only survived all these years because they were packed up and sealed so tightly and were in such a dry and arid area.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are currently in San Diego for it’s last public exhibition. I understand that due to rapid deterioration of the scrolls, lights can only be turned on the scrolls for 15 minutes at a time…the rest of the time, they’re kept in darkness.

I’m hoping to go and see them pretty soon!

Better take the flash for your camera !!!
😃

Though, presumably, the Torah that’s read at an Orthodox Jewish service would be the same as the Torah used 2,500 years ago, correct? That is, there was never an event where they decided to re-translate or recompile the scriptures, correct?

Council of Jamnia “edited” the Scriptures to remove pro-Messiah texts.

I’ve started a thread on this here: that talks about what Jamnia did and why.

That source sounds a little biased. I’d like to hear commentary from the other side.

Well, it is verifiable. Look at Isaiah prior to Jamnia, maybe in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Then look at Isaiah post-Jamnia.

It think that’s what the admittedly-biased source did, resorting to facts to back up theories.

Whoa, cool the sarcastic hostility. I was just suggesting that maybe they had a reason for doing so, other than to create tension with the Christians. Doesn’t seem likely, but I would still like to at least hear a defense.

No hostility. I admit that the author of Agape Bible Study is biased - you’re not making a false accusation there.

Sarcasm? Me?!? Guilty as charged, but hostile sarcasm? I demand a re-trial!!!

It’s hard to insert subtle humor (even if it’s poor subtle humor) into these texts, especially when my time on these threads is limited.

Sorry if I offended you, but I certainly didn’t mean any harm.

Not all cultures and people are “into” preserving old stuff. We have old bibles around our house and the question is never “how do we preserve this” but “how do we dispose of this”.

If you just received a new copy of the OT manuscripts, dispose of the old raggedy, torn, and stained copy. The new one is assumed to be an accurate copy.

In the movie “The Robe” it is presented as if the robe of Jesus were venerated. I think it was the Word of Jesus that was venerated as was his mother. His cloths were probably given to the poor.

Different cultures, different attitudes. No one preserved Caesar’s stuff, or Cleopatera’s stuff. etc. We don’t have Hamurrabi’s code, just a copy set in stone.

There is a Muslim on this site that thinks the falsity of the gospels can be shown because we don’t have the original, only copies. But we don’t have Muhammed’s horse, or sword, or hand written notes where he claimed to write the Koran. We don’t doubt that he did what was claimed, just because it is not preserved.

We have the original Declaration of Independence and constitution of the United States of America, but that is because we are a culture of hoarders. I don’t know if the original writings of Lenin are preserved (similar culture) or of Buddha or Mao (different cultures).
