I got the list of the 4 major prophets and the 12 miner ones, and Abraham and Moses aren’t even on the list! What are they if not prophets? Why where they on the list? Who else is important that is not on the list??
Lost,

Of course they are. The four major prophets and 12 minor ones are just a list of books that carry their names. There are lots of other prophets who don’t have books named for them.

Abraham, Moses, Miriam, Deborah, Samuel, Abijah, Elijah, Elisha, the company of prophets, unnamed prophets, Micaiah, David, John the Baptist, Agabus. And that’s only a short list.

How many do you think are out there?
I think I was once told that we are suppose to be prophets of God. Is that right? How is that possible? I thought Prophets where chosen by God…? Thanks your helping a lot!

Yes…
Wait… there were prophets in the new testament??? I thought the purpose of prophets where to prepare Jesus’s coming!?

Yes, hence my question.

The office of prophet in the Old Testament was ultimately to lay the groundwork for Jesus’ coming, but Jesus himself is THE Prophet. The last Old Testament prophet was John the Baptist. Under the New Covenant, the prophecy is a gift that is geared towards the proclamation of the Gospel. All of us who are baptized are partakers in Christ’s threefold office of Priest, Prophet, and King. In a way, all of us are prophets, insofar as we speak God’s message in our state of life.

The extraordinary gift of prophecy is still given, even into the present day, but those are for special circumstances for specific needs and people.

An example of a prophet in the New Testament is Agabus, who predicted Paul’s return to Jerusalem and the suffering he would endure there.
