Why is the devil evil? I can understand that it’s in his nature to be, but surely it can’t be rewarding? Does the devil not know the power of God? Is satan as eternal as God? What is the nature of the devil’s existence? It surely can not be as infinite as God’s.

Well, why do we sin then? Is it rewarding or not? I don’t think people would sin unless they could see something in it for them. I assume the devil operates likewise. Sin is, however, irrational at its base, and hence fairly inexplicable. Yet experience says that people sin.

While Scripture is remarkably reticent about the nature of the devil, the general understanding is that Satan was an angel, which suggests that Satan knows the power of God far better than we do, and is immortal. However, the few references in the Bible texts to Satan/devils do not hold out any hope for them being forgiven:
the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Revelation 20:10)
If this is the case, and Satan cannot be forgiven, then there would be no personal reason to become good. The twisted “reward” may be the same as that which an angry child seeks: revenge though self-destructive bahaviour.

I’ve always pictured Satan as a very bitter, remorseful, angry angel throwing a major temper tantrum for making the wrong choice. He can never be forgiven for turning away from God and He knows it, and there’s no going back. Since mysery loves company it just makes sense to me that he’d wreak havoc wherever he can.

And when you think about the reason for his rejecting God’s will it only makes sense that he’d play each and every human for the weak and pitiful creation unworthy of his respect he considered us to be when he refused to serve us after we joined God in heaven. He’s jealous of the place we hold in God’s eyes and the future He has planned for us, so he’s still trying to prove his point - he’s manipulating us over and over and over again to show how undeserving we are of God’s love but God’s mercy is unfathomable and I’m sure it drives Satan crazy.

What other choice does Satan have, really? He’s in the position he’s in for eternity. Do we honestly expect him to just sit back and rest comfortably in his dwelling place? He used to be in the full presence of God and now he is so far removed from Him it has to be excruciating for him. Of course he’d want to lash out and everyone and everything.

I’d feel sorry for him except when I remember that he had absolute full knowledge of the consequences of his decision.

Read “Paradise Lost” by John Milton. Satan is tremendously charismatic, enough so that a third of angels chose to follow him to hell. Pride is the Lucifer’s downfall. I think he uses all his powers to tempt man with his charisma, he corrupts seemingly noble ideas and twists them just a tad.

I’ve always wanted to read “Paradise Lost” 🙂

So I guess the answer is . . .

Why be evil?
Because it looks so nice . . .

(even though it isn’t)

But if Satan knew the power of God, and he understood all he could gain by being in God’s grace, why deny it?

Because Lucifer wanted to exist on his own terms. To have value for his own sake. As people love to point out, we should exist only to glorify God. Lucifer was not happy with this.

Satan was formerly one of the most powerful angels (he was called lucifer). He believed that he was more powerful than God, and got 1/3 of the angles to join him. He was then expelled from heaven, and sent to hell.

So did he not believe the truth, or was he just unwilling to accept it?

Also, when we die and hopefully enter the kingdom of Heaven, will we ever have to face evil again, or will we be eternally separated?
