Why can we trust the bible

Thanks. I only made it through almost 17 minutes and, while much of it dealt with debate procedures, Karl did make some good points.

But in the end, we don’t have anything that was unreadable and/or untranslatable in the Bible, do we? (I can think of the Vetus Latina as a possible example.) But then I guess a case could be made that it wasn’t really inspired by God if it couldn’t survive time among other things.

Maybe to further illustrate my point, I have Shakespeare’s Complete Works. It’s considered complete even though it contains totally blank pages, which at least they were being honest to admit unreadability or lack of authentication or something.

BTW, I do have the place marked in case you tell me to keep watching the video, which I might get to later. 🙂
I won’t tell you to keep watching. The first few minutes where what I had in mind and the video goes on for several hours in multiple parts.

I’m sick of hearing about the flood. The Bible can be trusted to save your soul.

Whether the flood actually happened or not has zero impact on the trustworthiness of the Bible. The Bible is not a history book.

The entire purpose of the Bible is salvation. Scripture was given to man by God for one reason - so that you might be saved. It’s not the only thing. It isn’t everything. But the Bible, when read in the framework of the teaching and living traditions of the Church, can be trusted to save your soul.

Again I say that it is amazing the impact that protestant fundamentalism has had on Catholics in America. Everything you say is precisely what the Church teaches, yet others still go on and on about trying to “prove” that the flood really happened. That is not the point.

It is when you’re making movies and writing Bible stories. I’ll bet more people watch or read these stories more than read the Bible itself.

Probably so. People should apply a little more knowledge/education and critical thinking skills when dealing with texts that date to a millennium before Christ. The average person doesn’t have a clue about the times and the cultures in which these books were written; what makes them think that they can pick it up and read it like the morning newspaper?

Because we trust in Jesus who founded the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church then gave us the Bible.
