Anyone here know anything about the Why Catholic program by Renew? If so what did you think about it?

Thank you

Our diocese suggested that parishes consider it, some however (the more liberal) decided not to use it and said the cost was the reason. They were the larger and more financially able. Even though it may seem orthodox, it does depend on the facilitator.

Br. Rich: Thank you. I am a facilitator. Just finisished the first six weeks. Those in the class actually wanted more instruction which I tried to provide even though it is strongly stressed that we are supposed to facilitate and not teach!
The class liked the additional information and fine tuning, and plan on continuing. I am definetly not a liberal, and 100% Catholic in my teaching.
I was just wondering if others taking the class found they acually followed the schedule or did any fine tuning also.

Again Thank You

Hi,

I’ve been going for some time…we just had our very last session. The lessons are in conjunction with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Bible. It has been a great experience for me and given me a better appreciation and understanding of my faith in living it. I’ve been with the same group of single women; and we met at a private residence rather then the church. You don’t have to be a teacher or know any more then the next person. The role of facilitator is to just lead and guide the group. Not to teach. Everyone shares what they got out of the lesson by answering a sharing question as well as other questions about sharing our faith through the lessons. There is also a section called Living the Good News…where you determine an action that flows from your sharing…that you can either do as a group or individually. I think it’s been a great experience and I’m thankful that I got to do it. Even though Why Catholic is over for us…we plan on continuing to meet for Bible study.

Thanks Elizabeth. We just finished our first six weeks, and my group did enjoy it.

What happens if someone in the group shares something that is just not “in tune” with Catholic belief or practice? Do you as the facilitator correct, explain the actual belief and practice of the Church? This is what we ran into in prior Renew programs. Sometimes the wording allowed slight off base ideas and some facilitators took the opportunity to promote their ideas. Which were not always those of the Church.

I think if that happens not only the facilitator would speak up but everyone else as well. I don’t remember that ever happening, we all are rather devout and are not of opinions contrary to Catholic beliefs.

And I didn’t realize that the program had negative aspects. .

I did not see any negative aspects so, far. Is that something I should be aware of in the booklets? I also teach RCIA, so I keep eveything according to our Church teachings.
Thnaks
