Thanks for the ideas! I would love to read posts from anyone presently going through “Why Catholic?”. Or those studying Scriptures or the Catechism as a group. Wondering what format is used and who facilitates the group. Since my vocation is “lay” Catholic not “religious”, I am very aware of my limitations of teaching doctrine, etc. Thanking all in advance for any help given!!

This is a very good question which came from another thread. Since there is a current thread on the Why Catholic Program and Renew International in general, I opted to open a new thread to address kindkath’s specific questions.

From what I’ve gathered, there are several Why Catholic groups entering into the third book this Lenten season. If anyone on the forum is currently participating in such a group or one covering one of the other books in the series please use this thread to share your experiences.

Thank you.

We are trying a beta test of an on-line small group, for those of us who have packed schedules already. Will let you know how it goes!

We are in the 2nd session of book 2, which is on the Sacraments. My group continued to meet between the sessions using the Prayer Time Cycle A booklet (also from Renew - we had used Share the Word from Disciples in Mission, then Exploring Sunday Readings from 23rd Publications). I had a copy of the Compendium and the US Catechism for Adults, but the DRE made several copies of the Catechism available for anyone who who didn’t have one. Like several others have noted, it’s only as good as the facilitator. The questions and actions are not study, but sharing our experiences of faith - what does this mean to me and how can I apply it to my life? The response to Why Catholic at my parish has been generally good, and it’s certainly a place to start. A lot of people haven’t had any religious education as adults beyond the Sunday homily. For those who want “more meat”, I suggest volunteering on the adult formation or evangelization committee at your parish. The small group experience doesn’t appeal to everyone, and maybe there are other materials or additional avenues your parish can explore.
