actually, he said i’m going to the “lake of fire” (because i’m catholic). that got me to thinking: why isn’t there more unity among Christians than there is? why do we Christians attack, and judge, each other? why can’t we just accept the fact that we have theological differences and leave it at that? why do we have to say that those Christians who are not in our group are going to hell?

of course, the answer for the baptist guy who damned me is that he doesn’t consider me a Christian.

so, what must one believe to be a Christian. in my opinion, the essential beliefs are as follows. please tell me if I missed anything.
  1. God exists in three persons–Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  2. Jesus Christ is the only-begotten Son of God.
  3. Jesus was fully God and fully man.
  4. Jesus died on the cross for our sins.
  5. Jesus is the only way to the Father.
if a person believes these things, isn’t he a Christian? if not, what else MUST he believe?

Ignore him! He is no one to judge!

We’re fallen creatures. We’re sinful and prideful. As far as why Christians fight amongst themselves, probably the same reason siblings fight so often.

Oh well, not his decision. Know Who’s you are. 👍

I think (take that for whatever it means) the Nicene Creed is the place to start.

God bless you

Yes that would be the first approach, but to a point. If that does not work, then let God do His work…👍

Amen to God doing his work. and i mispoke. i should have said Counter evenagelize. because the evangelization started with the Baptist. this is usually the way it goes, when i meet one. its all good, until they find out im Catholic. then oooh man! not only baptist, but most fundamentalist. i found out real quick during and after my Conversion, i had better have an answer for these fine folk. 👍 Peace 🙂

here’s the main point of this thread, though:

what is the core theology of a christian? what must one believe to be counted as a Christian? i’m especially interested in hearing from protestants. is unity possible?

From your Baptist friend’s perspective, you as a Catholic have added extra doctrines to the basic Christian doctrines. Thus, you’re damned.

sadly the word Christian is loosely used today to represent any group that believes according to the teachings of Jesus Christ as found in the Bible. this would also include groups who do not beleive in the Trinity nor do they believe that Jesus is the begotten Son of God. as you well know, many have taken the Bible and based on personal interpretations, made teachings that are full of errors. but the sad fact is they are considered Christians by mere technicallity, that they have based their teachings on the text of the Bible regardless if they understand the text completely or not.

with certain communions like the Anglicans and Orthodox, certainly. eventually the Lutherans too. Fundamentalist/Baptist? sadly not anytime soon. Peace

A good book I read by Karl Keating “Catholicism and Fundamentalism” Ignatius Press (ISBN 9780898701777).

Karl Keating is the founder and president of Catholic Answers. Go on the quick search and type his name.

Don’t let the paperback fool you. This book is so loaded with information. This book is also used in Catholic college theology classes across the country.

Loraine Boettener, Jimmy Swaggart, Jack Chick and many other “Anti Catholic” fundamentalists are mentioned in this book. I used this book like an encyclopedia at times to p(name removed by moderator)oint refutations against “Mary worship” and other “anti Catholic” issues.

For the basics, that sounds about right…specifically:

We believe in one God. The Father, the Almighty.
The maker of Heaven and Earth
Of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ.
The only son of God
Eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God,
Light from light
True God from True God
Begotten, not made.
One in being with the Father
Through Him all things were made.
For us men, and for our salvation,
He came down from Heaven.
By the power of the Holy Spirit
He was born of the virgin Mary, and became man
For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate
He suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day He rose again
in fulfillment of the scriptures.
He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and His Kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit
who proceeds from the Father and the Son
With the Father and the Son, He is woshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one Holy Catholic and apostolic Church
We believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sin,
We look for the ressurection, and life in the world to come
Amen.

It is my understanding and belief, that one must also be baptized in a trinitarian form.

Full belief in the creed, and baptism are what make a Christian.

As far as I know, the Roman Catholic Church started the whole Christian life, and is the universal church begin by it’s founder, Yeshua bar Yosef, Jesus son of Joseph, Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, the Lord, the Prince of Peace, the Bread of Life, the Lamb of God, when he told his disciple Simon, that he was Petra (the Rock), and that His Church was to be built upon Him, and that it withstand the gates of hell.

Look, I know some protestants have a different set of ideas. Myself, I was baptized in the Fousquare tradition just prior to going off to a life of new age theosophy and finally buddhism before being knocked off my horse by the Lord. But I sure hope I didn’t tell any Catholic CHRISTIANS that they were going to hell.

We need to pray for our protestant brothers and sisters. Please remember that many of us Catholics came from protestant beginnings. Protestants are Christians, so long as they are baptized with the trinitarian formula, and believe the creed word for word, but also that they eat the body of Jesus, and drink his blood. That they work out their salvation and fear and trembling.

The baptism BEGINS a journey to a completeness which won’t be fulfilled until Jesus returns in glory to judge the living and the dead.

It becomes apparent with enough courage, and openness to truth, the our Lord only intended on authority, which is to be guided by the Holy Spirit until His return.

It becomes the challenge of the protestant, (and once again, that is my background, so please don’t kick me), to prove somehow that the universal Church of our Lord Jesus the Christ is not the Church intended since it preceded the reform by a good 1,000 years earth time, and never, to this day, has taught in error from the Chair of the blessed Apostle Peter, who is represented on Earth by the Bishop of Rome through apostolic succession from the incarnation, until now (so far), on faith and morals. The Church that assembled and gave Christianity the Holy Bible. The Church that essentially gave us Western civilisation. The Church which even Martin Luther was a member of!

So when somebody says that a Catholic Christian shall be cast into a lake of fire, what comes into my mind is Christ forgiving his murderers from the cross. “Bless them Lord. They don’t know what they do”. In this case, they don’t know what they say.

God bless us one and all,
and please bring us all, once again, into your universal church.
Help us all to see the truth of Christ, and His Church.

Hi there CaptianMike,

Yes, one has to believe in steps 1 through 5 but then again Satan himself along with his army of angels do believe as well and yet these are not saved.

In order to be saved one has to do the will of the father, obey (John 6: 53-57) So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55“For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57“As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.

Captainmike, I know that you are aware of this, but I say this for My many Protestant brothers and sister who only think that steps 1 THRU 5 is all that is needed to be saved.

And as for that Baptist, well, his condemnation on you just might be turned against him/her because he/her is Judging "for thou shalt not judge, lest thy be judged.👍

Captainmike, Matthew5: 11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: 12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.

Stevefrancis hit the nail on the head: he mentioned the Nicene Creed. Add to it the Apostle’s and Athanasian Creeds and you have the essense of Christian faith. Even those who dislike creeds will agree with most of what the creeds say.

It is my constant prayer that we be united in the Church Militant. But surely we will be united in the Church Triumphant. Due to Vatican II, more progress has been made in the last 50 years than in the 450 years prior. Pray the Holy Spirit continues to move us

Why did the Baptist guy say you’re going to hell? Probably for the same reasons Catholics have told me (an ex-Catholic) that I’m going to hell. The actual reasons: arrogance and ignorance!

Amen to that brother! 👍

That doesn’t sound like any Catholic I know, but if any have said this to you, I would respond that they need to learn their own faith. It’s too bad that the arrogant and ignorant often get more press than the humble and knowledgeable.

I would say between 4 and 5 Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is a pretty crucial one.

First, i have found talking to many baptists is like talking to a wall - no way to communicate because they are always right and you are always wrong.

Of course many don’t consider Catholics as Christians because we have all sorts of pagan stuff in our religion - you know, like worshipping a goddess or ‘many gods’ (the saints), believing that Jesus is in that little cookie we get every Sunday (that’s a direct quote, people!), that Catholics don’t believe that Christ died for our sins, and that we invented a place in the afterlife called purgatory…blah blah blah.

And yes, you DID miss something: the EUCHARIST is the lifeblood of the Church.
