Why did God create us to suffer?

How can I explain to my adult son why God created us to be with him forever, and then require us to spend time in this world with all its pain, suffering, and sorrow, rather than just create us to be with him in heaven from the start?

God did originally create humankind to “be with him in heaven from the start”; it was the first man and woman, as representatives of the human race, who chose to break communion with God through sin (cf. Gen. 3). Pain, suffering, and sorrow are all consequences of that free human choice to reject God’s friendship. But God, in his mercy, chose to repair that relationship by sending his Son into the world to suffer, die, and rise again so that we too may once more achieve eternal life (cf. John 3:16-17).

That is the Christian gospel in a nutshell.
