he was at that point sacramentally present, having consecrated the bread, and vanished from their sight as soon as they realized who he was and that he was in their presence in the exposition of the Word and in the “breaking of the bread” – “were not our hearts burning within us?”

They did not recognize him as they walked along the road to Emmaus, as He explained the old testament scripture to them. They only recognized him in “the breaking of the bread.” This indicates that this is the way that He will be recognized now, following the resurrection. It is in the breaking of the bread–the Eucharist–that we will recognize him.

There are other forums and threads which deal with liturgical innovations, but the previous post suggests an urgent one.

I was at a Mass in Chicago where the priest paused several moments holding the Eucharist before breaking it (you know what I mean? after the Lamb of God and before the Behold the Lamb of God ?). I think that would be an excellent moment for a brief congregational song or response “they recognized Him in the breaking of the bread.”

I don’t think that quoting scripture spontaneously at Mass can ever be an abuse, even if it is outside the Norm.

i cant wait for the new NO mass translation SO MANY SCRIPTURE ECHOS!
