Why did Jesus need to die?

In one of Jeff Cavin’s Bible study series (I think it was on salvation history), he points to the story of Barabbas. According to Jeff, Barabbas literally means “son of the father”. So we have 2 sons of the Father, one without blemish as Pilot could find nothing wrong with him (think passover lamb), one rebellious and deserving of death.

But the only way Barabbas was able to be released was for Jesus to die. We are Barabbas, and we are released because Jesus died in our place.

A very interesting perspective.
