I think most of us know the meaning of Fatima. Our Lady visited the three young children in Fatima, Portugal 100 years ago. The effects of these appearances have been profound. Even before it was all said and done with, tens of thousands of believers and nonbelievers alike saw the sun dance in the sky. We know Our Lady has warned us about the errors of Russia and has asked us to do penance and pray our rosary daily to end war.

Here’s what I don’t understand. Why did she choose Fatima? I understand why she chose the three children. I get that. But why did our Lady choose Fatima?? See below.

Fatima, Portugal -

The name of the town and parish is a rendition of the Arabic given name Fátima ( فاطمة Fāṭimah). (Fatimah is the namesake of Fatimah bint Muhammad, a daughter of the prophet of Islam Muhammad.)

I remember reading an article about it. I may or may not remember it correctly, but here’s what I think it said.

The town is named not after Mohammad’s daughter, but of a Muslim convert to Christianity with the same name. She married a Christian man and eventually converted. This location Our Lady chose may have been an attempt to either encourage evangelization of Muslims, or let us know Muslims will be converted as a result of this apparition.

Like I said, I don’t remember it 100%.

You just gave the reason why. It is a link to the Islamic faith.

Fatima’s date, in addition to the name, also has significance in many ways:

Isn’t it more than likely she chose those particular children? Fatima just happened to be wherexthey lived?

When you take into account the origin of the word Fatima
(Fatimah is the namesake of Fatimah bint Muhammad, a daughter of the prophet of Islam Muhammad) what is the symbolism or significance of Our Lady of Fatima choosing Fatima? Yes, the children were there, but they were providentially living in Fatima by God’s design.

What does the Islamic faith have to do with the message and symbolism of Fatima?

I never found the location as curious as the number 13 the Lord and Our Lady made a point to make symbolic. 🤷

Our Lady is the Mother of Muslims and of the protestants. She wants them to come under her wing (and the whole world).

Spain & Portugal have a special history with Islam: they were occupied for several centuries. Portugal also has a link to the western hemisphere, in particular Catholic South America. It is also on the far end of Europe, the opposite of where Rasputin was, and the demise of the Russian monarchy, and the incoming revolution that would start in Russia and spread across the world.

I know Protestants who view certain Marian apparitions (such as Fatima) as demonic because of their association with 13. In other cases, Mary appeared at locations known to have been sites of pagan worship and evil practices: Tepyac Hill, where Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared, had been the site of an Aztec temple dedicated to female gods, where women were sacrificed.

This is not a sign of the demonic origin of these apparitions, but a sign of G_D not ceding ANY of His creation to the Evil One. These places where evil once held sway are now liberated by the actions of Mary (who was crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth after her assumption), appearing there, a royal queen laying claim and liberating land that had been stolen by the Evil One.

Likewise, to permanently link “13” to the Evil One is to give him – who never created anything and is simply a God-wannabe – undeserved authority over something of G_D’s creation, By appearing on the 13th of a month, Mary again lays claim to that portion of G_D’s creation that too many of the faithless followers of her Son are simply willing to give up to the Evil One.

The story of Fatima would make a GREAT romantic movie. Fatima was a princess, the daughter of a local Muslim ruler. One day, she and her ladies-in-waiting, along with some guards, went out on a picnic. She and her group were captured by Christian soldiers fighting to expel the Muslim invaders. Since she was a princess, she and her party were taken to a nearby castle held by a Christian prince, and negotiations were started to secure her release.

These negotiations took time, and in that time two things happened: her father lost several battles and so he was forced to retreat, and Fatima and the prince fell in love with each other. When Fatima’s father was forced to return to Northern Africa, her party along with her guards were released, but she stayed behind. She converted to Catholicism, knowing it meant never seeing her family again, and she and the prince were married.

As a new convert, she had a great enthusiasm for her new faith, and she became known in the village associated with the castle for her kindness, her charity to the poor, and her care for the ill and infirm. She became so beloved that when she herself took ill and died several years later, the village honored her by adopting her name: Fatima.

I have not heard of any Protestants looking at Fatima and the number 13 as a sign of demonic or God taking the number back. I’m sure some crazy preacher may have spouted such but it’s most likely not mainstream. Especially since Our Lady is not even understood by most Protestants.

I once read a Cardinal pondering why 13 was such a symbolic number regarding Fatima, I’ve never been much satisfied with any query, yet.

Though by looking at Holy Scripture God does in fact make use of the symbolisms of numbers.

Seriously? Just Google “Fatima demonic deception” – you’ll find one or two entries.

Fatima is known from Ancient times as the Land of Mary.

On one side of Europe at that time , evil was gathering - ww1 etc.
At Fatima, on the other side of Europe, God had sent Mary to teach us to pray, do penance, keep praying.

Every month Mary told us to keep praying the Rosary daily for peace. And do penance, esp for souls who went to hell because they had no one to pray or do penance for them…
